edgar_njari
well negative film by its nature has less contrast, but there are some colorfull films. In 120 the Kodak UC series. The new Portra VC series is also supose to be updated with more saturation this year (but probably still less than UC) In my opinion 160VC (the current version) is quite contrasty for such a type of film. bill_tuthill
Yes, Portra 160VC is higher contrast than UC100, but I find UC400higher saturation (especially blue) than either. Velvia is a goodanswer too.
edgar_njari
also, while Portra 160VC and 400VC share the same last name, they are not just different speed versions of the same film, probably are supose to be, but they don't look the same. I think 400VC has more latitude, and a more pleasing contrast, though the color palette is similar. That's just my subjective obseravtion
bill_tuthill
Pleasing contrast meaning less? Several past threads on this forum have asserted that 160VC is higher contrast than 400VC.
edgar_njari
Well in case of Portra VC, yes, it's less in 400VC the way I see it But that's not what I ment by pleasing contrast. By pleasing I mean the way the curve feels more rounded on the edges. Contrast feels smoother to me. To be more specific, I think 400VC highlights have a more tender quality, while 160VC does them a bit harsh for my taste.
