jason_b.
Did some real world sharpness tests today. f1.4 @ 1/250 Killer, incredible, just blazing sharpness. My scanner sucks, or I would post a close up where you can see detail in the iris of the eye. But here's an overall shot or two.

richard s.
Great shot. Sharpness sounds (since one can never really "see" on a computer screen) like my Heliar 50/3.5. Although granted there are a few stops difference between the two!
jason_b.
Another. No jokes about the t-shirt. And no, I wasn't born yet.

john_r._fulton_jr.
Well did Kate complain about the sharpness?? That's usually a good sign that a lens is too sharp. Heh. What have you been using and how does it seem to compare?? I know that's a pretty subjective question.
jason_b.
My old lens was a 50 lux e46 which seems like a totally different concept from this lens. Also I;ve been using a 50 cron (current) and it's pretty close. The ASPH may have a little more sharpness and snap to it. Similar in look to my 35/2 ASPH. One think I noticed is that the bokeh is pretty nice. I don't know what Erwin got all worked up about. Maybe Leica just had a back stock of the old 50/1.4. And for those of you who responed to my last post, the focus is much looser now. It's almost where I'd like it, and I'm not worrying about the aperture being looser than I like them. I guess I just take pictures for a while.
Uhooru
Jason, I have to agree that your scanner sucks, because these don't look all that tack sharp to me. Sorry. I'm sure they are, just hard to see on the screen.
evan_litvin2
Hey Jason, I was actually going to complement you on the shirt, I've got the same one, and I'm probably younger than you... haha

kajabbi
Hey Jason, You don't have to put a caption on the pictures. Just hit the "space" bar once or twice and upload.
doris_chan
"Oh yeah! 50 ASPH.....Killer, incredible, just blazing sharpness...." I'll take your word for it, because I certainly can't see it. You might have been better off spending the money on a decent scanner.........

bob haight
Fine lens and digital scanners just don't mix. Digital is the great equalizer. Shoot some slides and enjoy your 10x loupe.
onelostsoul
>"Fine lens and digital scanners just don't mix. Digital is the great equalizer. jason_b.
I don't know about you guys, but I actually judge a lens by looking at the negs (as I spent years as a professional printer I think I'm qualified) and making big prints in a darkroom. I don't really desire to sit around my house making hi res scan to toss up on the web - I've got a friend in NJ who does all my scanning for me. But, I'll see if I can borrow time on an imacon today to show you all what I'm talking about. Anyway, I ran home and used my lame-ass scanner so I could share with you all, not so I could hear about my lack of scanning prowess.
pensacolaphoto
Jason: We run into such forum criticism quite often. At the same time, it is nice to see among negative comments the positive input by the welcoming crowd here. This compensates for the few guys who just love to share with us their negative feelings. This is a great website and this is the best forum in it.
jason_b.
I agree Raid. Pretty interesting group of folks here. That's why I like it. Sorry all, no Imacon access today. I'll see what I can do later in the week.
skeeter
if you ever have a chance to compare the pre-asph to your lens i would like to see the comparison shots, or at least hear your opinion from the light table examination of the negs.
jason_b.
When I've got a minute, I'm going to compare the following: 50/1.4 ASPH, 50/1.4, 50/2 cron. 50/2.8 elmar, and 50/1. It'll be a while, but I'll let you know when I've got it done.
ronald_wills
Glad you're enjoying your new lens Jason. I'm looking forward to your lens test comparison. Better use that better scanner though or risk a buffooning by Chucky.
