Bullk film question

Recommended Posts

I've just started bulk loading film (XP-2 Super with Watson 100).

While buying bulk film I see choices on B&H such as:

Unperforated

Unperforated 1" core

Perforated

Perforated on spool

Unperforated 1" Plastic "AA" Core

408 Plastic Version of S-83 No. 10 Metal Spool

Double Perforated

What does all this mean and is there any issue with loading

bulk film with such specs using my Watson 100?

Thanks,

Rahul

The perforations refer to the sprocket holes along the sides

of the film. Your bulk loader may or may not care about

perforations (many bulk loaders use the perforations

to guide the frame counter), but regardless of the

loader, most 35mm cameras care very much about

perforations, and will only accept film with

standard perforations. Most bulk loaders want

film on a 1" core.

The vast majority of bulk film that's normally in

stock at B&H works fine in most loaders and cameras,

and the majority of stuff with nonstandard perforations

or spools is only available by special order at B&H.

There used to be some 35mm cameras which would be able to cope with (single) perforated film (those have a single sprocket wheel instead of a sprocket shaft), but I think the great majority of today's cameras will accept double perforated film only. Most loaders work well with bulk film without spool or core (I only know this variety). If you feel the need for bulk film with core or spool, check the outer diameter of the bulk film roll against the max diameter you can accomodate in the loading chamber of your loader.
