karen_s.
Hi there I'm a college graduate and recent Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. I studied Journalism in college and have always been interested in Documentary Photography. I would like to go into Photojournalism eventually, but I want to study the technical side of Photography first (especially considering that my portfolio is almost non existant). I know about the Art Institutes (don't know how good they are), but I'm sure there is scale of better verse "ok" photo schools. I'm excluding the Masters in Photojournalism programs at various universities... What are some of the schools you would recommend, knowing that I already have a B.A. and that I want to get the technical skills in photography???? Thanks so much!Karen Shacham
mark feldstein
Greetings Karen and welcome back (from Peace Corps duties, anyway). If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably select the Rochester Institute of Technology for mastering the technical side of photography. maury_cohen
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA, dies an excellent job in doing technical training. their approach is to build basic skills in exposure, development, etc. then begin to add theoretical/creative skills after the technical becomes second-nature. ellis_vener_photography
Wjhat is it exactly that you mean by "technical"? Portfolio Center in Atlanta, GA Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA Rochester Institute of Technology I'm "iffy" at best about the Art Institute programs, but I think that will depend on where you go and who is teaching there. For photojournalism there is Eddie Adams Workshop, and programs at the Santa Fe and Maine Photographic Workshops among others.
karen_s.
Hi, Let me clarify something. I'm interesting in Photojournalism, so I would rather steer clear of the schools that focus on Photography as Art. Thanks...
karen_s.
Oh, and by technical schools, I mean one's that give you a GREAT background on lighting, studio, cameras. Basically, any situation you might find yourself in.
ellis_vener_photography
It will be difficult to separate an "art" education from a technical education --at least at any decent school but I think I take your point. Have you considered a series of workshops at either the Santa Fe Workshops or the Maine Photographic Workshops? here is a possible cirriculum fom this summer's Santa Fe Workshops: Week 1ÑJune 12-18: Photographic Lighting Techniques - Douglas Merriam Week 2ÑJune 19-25: Cutting-Edge Portraits - Dan Winters ( I really can't recommend Dan highly enough as a teacher. He really knows his stuff, is very articulate, and makes fantastic, challenging photos.) Week 3ÑJune 26-July 2: Target Your Market - Mary Virginia Swanson Week 4ÑJuly 3-9: The Color of Light - Arthur Meyerson Week 5ÑJuly 10-16: Beginning Photoshop CS - Genevieve Russell or Personal Documentary Photography - Alex Webb & Rebecca Norris Webb Week 6ÑJuly 17-23: National Geographic Expeditions: Digital Photography in Santa Fe - Joe McNally , or Photoshop CS: The Next Step - Kirk Amyx Week 7ÑJuly 24-30: Location Photography and Lighting - Joe McNally You should also look at http://www.photographyatthesummit.com
nate weatherly
From what I've heard Western Kentucky University has one of the best(if not the best) photojournalism curriculum in the U.S. I don't do photojournalism, this is just what I've read and heard. Check it out anyway. :o)
