"In the Street" documentary by Helen Levitt and James Agee

Back in the forties, Helen Levitt and James Agee made a short

documentary film called "In the Street" that captured life on the

streets of Harlem at the time.

Has anybody seen this film and can tell me where I might find it?

I'm in Berkeley, so maybe this is something Jeff or the other Bay

Area people can help with. It looks like I can order it on the web,

but the price is $50, for a film that's only 15 minutes. I'd rather

rent or buy it cheaper if possible.

Somebody who wrote the single review of it on www.IMDB.com said it

was on a compilation that he bought on the grey market somewhere.

Anybody know what that compilation was called? Thanks everybody.

Oh yeah, if anybody's seen it, did you like it?

Just had a chance to see this.

I won't detail the way I manged to finally see this -- or how I manged to see this (a gray area, alas, in this age of internet video) -- but yes: what a strange and wonderful (and short) film!

I know Levitt worked with Agee and others -- but the film had an unmistakable "Levitt look" to it -- and I kept (half) expecting Levitt's still images to emerge (somehow) from the moving images.

If you can see it -- or find -- go for it!

I first became awair of this film from the Rick Burns series New York documentry. They opened with it in episode 7.
If you want to get a feeling for it you should check out the documentry. After seeing it I was lucky enough to find a vhs copy . its now out of print . I understand that the estate wants to release it to museums for viewing.
hope this helps...
