soboyle www.oboylephoto.co
I'm looking for suggestions on which software for editing home videos. I've used some of the more expensive packages before, Premier, Ulead Media studio pro and others, but I need something for editing home movies on a budget. Wondering which home video editor come recommended today. I'll be splicing together a lot of shorts video segments from my canon S400 digital still camera and had problems with that before when bringing them into a video editing package, it wouldn't read the files for some reason. emre
You could do worse than Sony Vegas Movie Studio at $99 (or $49 if you are a student): http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=932 Your digital camera probably uses a proprietary codec; unfortunately, most do. MichaelChang
Another option is TMPGEnc:<br> http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te3xp_spec.html<br><br>Although the SONY package might be a better choice for the money.
justin_smith2
Shaun, Try the freeware program Virtualdub at www.virtualdub.org. It should handle the .avi files with no problem. The interface isn't eye candy, but it is FAST in processing and is free!
soboyle www.oboylephoto.co
I have a copy of Vegas 4.0 here, but the .avi files from my canon S400 will not play in Vegas. I get sound, but no video. Any idea if I can get this to work? is there another codec required? The avi files play fine in media player.
jsbc
The video are memory hogs (I have the IXUS 40 which have beautiful 640X480 30fps clips.) What I do is convert them to DivX which only takes up 10% fo the space, and then use virtual dub to cut and splice.
rich_b1
I thought I posted this, but don't see it. My apologies if double posted. CompUSA has Roxio's Video Wave 7 Profession Free after $50 rebate, but in store only. Here's the link http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?N=0&Ntt=roxio&Ntk=All&Nty=1&D=roxio&Dx=mode%20matchall
free_bird
Hello what do you use to convet to DivX ? and do you just convert avi ? can mpeg be converted ? is it worth it. ? all my captures are in mpeg. thanks mark
jsbc
There are various programs which convert avi (I think Canon uses MJpeg) and mpeg into DivX. Some of these are shareware or even freeware. Personally I use Dr DivX which costs $49.99 but I think you can get a 30-day demo for free at www.DivX.com.
