some of the prints are missing tops or bottom that are visible on

the slide. I was told it would be difficult to get the entire area

I'll take a crack at this one. Two things:

 

 

1. You wrote in your other question that you had 5x7s made. Your slides have about a 24x36 image area, with an aspect ratio of 2:3.

 

 

In order to match that aspect ration in a 5-inch print, you would need to get a 5x7.5 inch print (2x2.5 by 3x2.5). So, right off the bat, you are necessarily losing some of the image off the long side of the image by ordering 5x7s.

 

 

2. In machine printing, some cropping will occur. Optical gates and digital slit scanners are not able to scan from edge to edge on 35mm slides or negatives.

If you have 4x6 prints made you should get most of the image. But like Eric said, you'll still probably lose a little.

And don't forget that you are also losing some of your image under the slide mount unless they are removing it from the mount when they make the print.

You will want to use these when you need full frame. Many labs will create a custom size for you if you want
