If Ilford SHOULD Stop Making Film... alternatives for staining developers

Thanks for the interesting posts on Ilford's prospects. Sounds like

nothing definitive yet. Hopefully rumors of their demise...

 

If Ilford SHOULD stop making film, do folks have good

recommendations on film that stains well? My two "go-to" films have

been Tri-X (because I liked it slightly better than HP5+) and FP4+.

But the new Tri-X is very different in PMK Pyro; I can't get a

decent stain. So I've been using HP5+ (including Freestyle's brand.)

 

I don't know what I'd do for a 400 speed film to match HP5+ for

stain.

You've got Kodak's Plus-X at 125, Tri-X, T-Max 100 & 400, & the chromgenics;

 

Fuji's Acros 100, Neopan 100 & 400,

 

Agfa 100 & 400 (which works for me in WD2D+ and PMK);

 

Efke 100

 

Bergger (sp?) 200

 

and various films from Forte, Maco and I'm sure can fill in on the ones I've missed.

Efke 100 and Fortepan/J&C Classic/ClassicPan/Arista.EDU 400 both do well in pyro.

I prefer 400TMax to any other film. It stains beautifully with minimal fog stain in all pyrogallol and pyrocatechin based developers.

What type of speed are you getting with 400TMX in which developer?

Also check out the Film, Developing Film and Chemistry forums on the Azo forum at http://www.michaelandpaula.com/ Bunch of interesting posts there about how various films take to different pyro developers. Probably more stuff related to Pyrocat-HD than PMK but should still be useful.

Thanks for all the info. I've used some of the mentioned films, but not all. I will look at Paula and Michael's website. I've had a wonderful conversation with Michael, and bought their great book on Edward Weston, but haven't really paid much attention to their website.
