danny_liao
I recently did some night architecture photography with my D1X and I'm shocked to see what appears to be noise on all of the images. My question is that I "think" it's noise, but is not sure. Can someone confirm? I shot this attachment at 30sec @ f22 at ISO125 RAW. Image is cropped into get better visiual of what i'm talking about.
Karim Ghantous
It is noise, but not the same as signal-to-noise ratio kind of noise. It's the result of the sensor being activated for too long. All sensors suffer, but newer cameras like the D2H and D70 are much, much better.

Have a look at this page of dpreview.com's D1X review and you'll see that even at 15 seconds you start to get noise. ellis_vener_photography
There is a technique I've used a couple of times where you make the long exposure and then put the lens cap on the lens and make a second exposure art the same exposure settings. This lets you make a map of the over stimulated photosites.
danny_liao
Ellis, can you elaborate on your technique alittle bit more?
danny_liao
By the way, is there a aftermarket software to remove that kind of noise?
greg s
NeatImage works quite well when there is a good sample area (e.g. sky). This is my mainstay noise remover... demo = free :) http://www.neatimage.com/download.html There are other tools out there. Good luck!
kasigi
The noise on the D1x at slow shutter speeds is pretty hellish. For long exposures I usually retreat to medium format film (or occasionally large format if I feel especially masochistic).
