Finer honeycomb grids for Bowens units

Recommended Posts

Hello

I'm equipped with S fitting Bowens heads and have two sets of 20,30

and 40 degrees honeycombs that fit 7" deep reflector. My problem is

that I need to produce a smaller beam of light using honeycomb grids.

I don't really want to use a snoot as I prefer the quality of

light/fall off produced by honeycombs.

I also have a universal spot attachment but it will be used in the

same shot to project/simulate window light.

I had the idea of putting two 20 degrees honeycomb grids on each

other two increase the depth of the grid but would like your opinion

before trying in case anyone has already tried this.

Also if anyone has an idea on where to find finer 7" diameter

honeycomb grid, that would be welcome. I think 10 and 5 degrees would

be ideal.

Thanks a lot.

I've never tried combining honeycombs, try it and see. I have both 5 and 10 degree ones, bought in the U.K, so they are definately available.

I showed a picture with the circles of light produced by various honeycombs in one of the Weekly Lighting Themes (filed under 'Administration' in this forum, on studio equipment and lighting.

Try Balcar, I have a set which fits onto many 7" reflectors. The set in back or gray goes from 10 to 40 by 10. I beleive you can buy them individually. They also have a 3 degree one that is just great for that narrow beam grid look which is what you are looking for.

I might be wrong but I think there is a elimchrome or broncolour 5 deg grid.

Speedotron makes a 3 degree grid spot that will fit 7" diameter reflectors that are

designed to hold grids (AKA honeycombs) and grid holders. In addition Balcar makes a 7'

diameter angle reduction ring that you can put behind any 7" grid that will cut down on

the angle. these show up for about US $5.00 all the time on eBay -- look in the lighting

category and then search for "Balcar".

The standard 7' Balcar grid set is 40, 30, 20 & 10 degrees.
