Manfrotto 055 Pro plastic head

I just bought a Manfrotto 055 Pro and when I unpacked it found that

it has a plastic QR mount. I then read on the board that some people

have had problems with them. Is this a serious shortcoming or am I

just being over-cautious? if this is a problem, does anyone know of

a solution or a workaround?

Secondly, any recommendations which QR system I should buy? I am

shooting with 35mm and a 300mm lens but I may move up to medium

format at some time in the future. the RCO seems the most solid but

it may be a bit big for the 35mm. The the two square fittings, the

RC2 and RC4, seem a little less sturdy and don't have that

solid "thunk" when they click in.

Any suggestions?

Regards

I thought the 055 was a legset only so I am not sure if the seller tossed in a cheap head or what.

I have the RC4 on one of my heads and I must say the positive lock and how solid the connection is great. The latch is a double safety latch so you have to make sure it is in the right position because when I put my QR's in, the lever snaps over and locks it solidly.

I would suggest that if you are talking about a canon 300/2.8L or something else large that you look at a ballhead like the acratech. If you buy a cheap or lightweight head, the first thing that lens is going to do is swing down into the tripod legs and bend the filter rings.

"Thanks for the quick reply. Yes the 055Pro is just a tripod. the plastic part I was referring to is the bit on top of the centre column that you fit the head to"

Are you referring to the "head" thread cover which is a nylon cover?

If so pull this off to locate the head screw and to which you screw on your choice of head.
