terence_tong1
Hi, New to digital, need recommendation on PC program for sorting pictures. What I am looking for is program that can store "extra" information, sort of like comments; i.e. 'kid b-day burn cake' 'kid b-day good cake'then in years later, these text are searchable so even if i forgot which year b-day party has a burnt cake, I'll still be able to find it. Preferably, the program can store or view (no edition require for I'll use PS for editing) RAW files. I hope it's not too far fetch and pardon my non-lingo description for a novice. Thankstt
grizzlymarmot
I think everyone is trying to figure out the best way to solve this issue. My advice would be to put the keywords right into the image file. This is called metadata and for there are several programs (including the latest versions of PS) that can do this. The metadata is put into IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Counci) metadata fields. Then you can use any image cataloging program like iView Media Pro or Extensis Portfolio which can read the IPTC data. Search for 'metadata' in photoshop help to start. mendel_leisk
Just build a text file, logging the information for each file?

terence_tong1
They all sounded and seemed good with iView being on my top list solely based on interface design. BTW, I use Wintel machine, how's the 'converted' version of iView? Thanks TT
kaiyen
I've read a number of recommendations for iMatch. I would've gone for it, except that work wanted something fully cross-platform, with server capability and a searchable web database. So we went to Extensis Portfolio. I've used better, to be honest, but it's actually quite powerful if you need those particular features. allan
dave_nelson___atlanta__ga
I use ACDSee and enter that "extra" information into EXIF fields so that I can use any program in the future that is able to read EXIF data to search and sort the images. terence_tong1
I am going with iView thanks to its Apple type GUI. It is as powerful as I wanted and then some. The only gripe, which isn't much was it doesn't download the pics from the CF or camera directly. (Unless I missed it or it's named something else) But it does have a Drop Folder watch option which will come in handy Thanks again, tt
