daverhaas
Recently I was on a paid gig for a venture capital company, and a local reporter and photographer showed up to do a story on the company. The photographer was using a Nikon D4 and a lens that I could not identify - I'm pretty sure it was a Nikon, older zoom. Probably f2.8 but not 100% certain - I am 100% certain it is not a 24-70 f2.8, 28-70 f2.8 (at least not a Nikon branded one) - and probably not a 17-35...

I have an image of the lens - cropped from a photo I took - where he happened to be standing in frame.

Wondering if any of our Nikon experts can help with id'ing the lens.

Thanks in advance

Wouter Willemse
Not sure, but could be the AF 24-50 f/3.3-4.5 or 24-85 f/2.8-4 maybe?
pcnilssen
No, it is NOT a Nikkor 24-70! I don't think it is a Nikon-branded 2,8 either...
daverhaas
Thanks! - Wouter - I think you nailed it - based on the focus ring - it looks like the 24-50 f3.3-4.5.
haven't found an image of one zoomed out - but it sure looks like it.

dave
jose_angel
David, I`d say it is a 24-85/2.8-4. It looks "fatter" than the 24-50. Check the big jump from the aperture ring to the zoom barrel diameter.
ArthurRichardson
No 24-70 which is much bigger. And no 800mm either, but I'm not sure.
Dieter Schaefer
Wrong focus ring rubber for it to be the 24-50 (four rows of rectangular knobs instead of six rows of more squarish ones) . The line by the focus ring indicates some "macro mode". 24-85/2.8-4 is a good candidate.
User_4754088
Yeah, it's the Nikkor 24-85mm f:2.8-4 D. Got the lens sitting right in front of me on my wire's camera.

Not a huge fan of the lens as the copy my wife has is not very sharp.
mike_halliwell
+1 Jose et al for Nikon 24-85mm 2.8/4 D The zoom ring has only 4 rubber-grip ring segments....and it has the orange Macro line really close to the focus ring. Looks zoomed to about 30mm?
ShunCheung
Dan Brown just bought a bunch of early AF/AF-D lenses from KEH, and he posted an image showing all of those lenses: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00cIox

The rubber grip on the zoom ring on this lens is definitely different from any one of those in Dan's image.

Interesting that this photographer is matching the D4 with that lens.

daverhaas
Shun -
Your last sentence is exactly why I wanted to find out which lens it is... The photographer was an older gentleman - probably been with the paper for 30-40 years - came in with the D4 and one lens - nothing else.

I thought it an odd match for a d4 - especially since he came into the shoot cold - no knowledge of lighting or setup... just told reporter doing an interview need 1 shot of the subjects.

Dave
robert_stig
24-85 2.8-4 garbage lens. id take the 28-105 3.5-4.5 over this in a wink
dan_brown4
It looks like the 24-85/2.8-4.0D-AF zoom. Sort a pro-am lens that get some respect and was offered for sale for many years.

ETA, that lens was released on 2000, and is still available new today.
ShunCheung
It reminds me what Dan Brown said a few years ago about putting some cheap lens on the then brand new D700: "like dressing Miss America in a burlap bag." http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00QQ28
