nothing like it, ridiculously atmospheric. go in jan, light is harsh but it has few tourists which will let you appreciate how beautiful venice sounds as you wander the streets listening to people do their thing(cough, walk, moan) 2-3 streets away.

Late September is also a good time. The crowds have mitigated to a large degree, the weather is nice and you can easily get into the top restaurants and the family places, off the beaten path.
