all-star sports photograph
Anyone in the Los Angeles area. I have been told that there are a few places that you can go to find really good deals on used camera gear if you know what you are looking for and or looking at. From what I know mainy of the people that frequent these places are small used camea retailers. Has anyone heard of or know were any of these places are?
BrianS1664879711
I haven't known a decent place for used camera equipment in Los Angeles for many years. Seriously... the places to shop are all on the web: ebay, KEH, Calumet Clearance Center (ebay), and Midwest Photo (Columbus OH).
...
Mike D
Paul's' Photo in Torrance has been around for decades and they do stock a lot of used equipment, some to supply to high school photography programs. There really is a lot of used equipment tucked into this store.
frank_skomial
Giant camera stores like Frank's Camera or Olympic Camera are long gone, but there are numerous smaller camera stores like:
http://www.canogacamera.com/
http://www.calumetphoto.com/ctl?ac.ui.pn=compinfo.CompStoreLocDetail&ac.comp.locID=LA
http://www.whcamera.com/
http://www.hoopercamera.com/
or attend monthly camera swap meet, ...you can bring your own gear for sale there...
http://www.bargaincamerashows.com/
There are dozens of Ritz cameras:
http://www.ritzcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/MapQuestView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&languageId=-1&city=Los+Angeles&state=CA&zipCode=
http://simons-camera.in-hollywood-ca.com/

http://www.samys.com/stores.php
and many many more...

BrianS1664879711
"and many many more..."

Last time I was at a couple of those places there was vey little or no used equipment to be found. The used equipment market at brick-and-mortar stores has been dreadful for the last decade or so. Remember all of the used stuff at Reseda Cameras... or that used camera shop that once was on Reseda Blvd just east of Reseda... or Sherman Oaks Camera? And FRANK'S... what a memory! Ahh... the "good old days."

The Burbank camera show... I forgot all about that! (Oops, I just checked the link... it is now the Pasadena camera show... I guess I haven't beento it in a while!)

But since you are a "Valley Boy" by the sounds of it maybe you can remember the name... what is the place on Balboa near Nordhoff (southeast corner)... they had a display of used equipment that I think was for sale. Maybe it is called Camerabug?
...
spanky
Yes, LA is a wasteland when it comes to decent used gear. I also suggest KEH but the Pasadena show once a month has turned up a few good finds for me, most recently my F2.
robert lee

Yes, LA is a wasteland when it comes to decent used gear.

That's sounds about right. Even postings in the area's craigslist tend to be sparse and asking prices unlrealistic.

I'll add one more local shop. There's Bel Aire Camera in Westwood. The selection of used gear is quite limited, but at least they still carry darkroom supplies.

john tonai
Brian,
You sure brought up some memories. I managed the used equipment department at Reseda shortly before the Knox family sold the store to Hoopers.

John
