john_graham3
I no sooner got my new Epson V700 than my GF's father asked me if I could scan "a bunch" of his old slides onto a CD or DVD so he can look at them on his TV instead of setting up his old projector and screen. I haven't even had time to unpack the scanner out of the box yet but it looks like this will be one of my first "jobs" with it. I would like to waste, er spend as little time as necessary on this, so my question being, does anyone have experience with what the minimum scan resolution would be for maximum quality on a HDTV, beyond which it would be a waste? Thanx in advance.
blumesan
I'm not familiar with the Epson V700. With most scanners the resolution setting is not a big factor in determining the time it takes to scan. The major factors are adjusting for any color, contrast and other corrections you need, and that will depend on the quality of the slides.
KenPapai
Exactly, all you need to do is make sure the scans you're getting from the 35mm slides are about 1800 pixels wide (approx. 1200 dpi scans). You're good to go after that. wal-mart will even do this for fairly cheap beause I doubt you'll need total pro quality if all they are going to do is view the slides on low-res TV. It may be less hasle if you have 500 slides to scan and just late the major chain store take on the aggravation and deliver to you the CD. Been there done that. Good luck! david_alexander
The standard resolution for HDTV, I believe, is either 1280x720 or 1920x1080, depending on the model of the TV. So scanning at 1200ppi is a pretty good choice since that would give you a 1800x1200 (approximately) image for 35mm slides, which is close to the larger of the two standards.
