Scanning 120 film

  1. Years ago I scanned many of my slides to Kodak CD. What a wonderful process. This past week I sent out 40 frames of 120 (30 landscape slides/10 people negatives) I shot years ago and they all suck. The lab did enhanced scanning and the quality for resolution is just OK but they are all flat. The highlights are all blown out to be almost a gray sky for the slides. Researching scanning topics on this site does not address my concerns. Some of the better are 5/6 years old. So my question is where do I go from here. I want to shoot landscapes on my Rollei film camera and scan the good frames. Should I pop the money for a Coolscan or is there a lab that can help me out. Very much appreciate your kind response.
     
  2. Edward, perhaps you don't need a Coolscan. There are two very good options at this time. One is the Plustek OpticFilm 120:

    Couple of points for the moment.
    First, in order to give good advice on what sort of scanning/scanner might be required for your purpose depends on knowing what your purpose is for the scans. For example if you're intending to produce large prints to hang on a wall then you need a different sort of scan than if you're just planning to display your images on a screen-based application such as a website.
    Second it is quite usual for scans- even good ones-to require some work in an image editor before they are ready for their intended usage. Some sources work harder than others to match the colour and contrast of the original, but as long as the data is all there its generally not such a big deal if the colours are a little flat. But it is a big deal if they have lost significant data that was in in your originals as you won't be able to put it back. I'd consider it unusual for scans to be both flat and with blown highlights as you infer.
    Third there are certainly scanning services that can produce a good scan for whatever purposes you envisage, Whether you should buy a scanner or not is IMO more a function of how many you want to scan rather than being necessary to produce respectable quality.
     
  4. Edward: I shoot 120 color film and scan at home with an Epson V600 flat bed scanner. The Epson V750 mentioned above or Epson V700 is even better). Most scans come out somewhat flat and do require adjustments in post processing.     I haven't seen my scanner blow the highlights of film if I scan "flat" with no adjustments during the scan where the highlights were not blown on the film. However, I have blown highlights when using the scanner to auto adjust the light levels during the scan. Maybe that's what this particular lab did.
    Why don't you post a couple of the photos you had scanned so we can see what they look like.
     
  5. If you're looking for (6x6) "good enough" then V750/700 will deliver. Many of us were disappointed with the Plustek 120/35...to be polite. It was hyped all along...and unable to deliver. Many of us have sizable archives and some would pay even $500 more (I know I would) for better DR and be able to get a crisp scan....in a timely manner.
    Essentially, and unless you go to drum quality, the Minolta or Nikon scanners are no longer supported....so any sort of service will be uber expensive or nonexistent.
    Frankly, you can do a digi copy with P&S or DSLR for web use or you can have it done by more reliable lab....and get high quality scans done when you wish to enlarge your image/es.

    "The Plustek OpticFilm 120 does not have many competitors on the film scanner market. The extremely fast film scanners Nikon Super Coolscan 9000ED or Hasselblad Flextight X1/X5 play in a different league both in terms of price and in terms of quality. The Reflecta MF5000 is cheapter and much faster than the Plustek OpticFilm 120 and delivers a similar image quality, however, in a lower resolution. Flatbed scaner like the Epson Perfection V750Pro don't achieve the image quality of the Plustek.
    "Since we and lots of our customers had many problems with the Plustek OpticFilm 120, we have taken that scanner out of our assortment."

  9. I own a Plustek 120 and must say that using any scanner is like using a camera. Operator competence is 90% of the success in using them; machine 10%. With that being said, the Plustek 120 takes some learning curve to operate. It can get the job done once you get used to the Silverfast software. This machine has some glitches, where it will refuse the film tray upon initiation of the pre-scan. Their "help desk" in So. California is very helpful in solving any problems. It does a pretty good job matching the slides unless you try to scan something that is noticeably underexposed. Could this machine be improved? Yes. Can it make scans for publication purposes? Yes. I don't feel it can go larger than a 16X20 print from a 6x7 however.
     
  10. Do you need only a few high quality scans once in awhile for those pictures you wish to print? If so, you may wish to consider having them scanned by a lab using a Hasselblad scanner where they scan into a 3F format, which is Hasselblad's "raw" format. You can download Hasselblad's flexcolor software for free and then process the 3F files yourself. It is easy to use. This will save you mucho dollars compared to a professional lab doing the color correction, contrast, spotting, etc. I just started trying this method after previously owning a Nikon 9000 scanner and doing everything myself. I sold the scanner a couple of years ago because 1) Nikon won't fix it if it breaks and 2) the price got so high on fleabay that I just couldn't resist selling it before it broke. I am trying out scanningfilm.com. I also have heard good things about Richard's lab in LA, but haven't tried them out yet.
     
  11. Thank you for the good responses. I have learned quite a bit about this scanning process and will look to cherry pick the slides I need in the future for lab work. The Lab Director responded to me and agreed that the frames were flat and he put his best lab tech on my job. He will redo the job when I send the frames back. In response to Dave Henderson (your work is very impressive) the landscape negative I was talking about was one of the first medium format slide I took about 15 years ago. The greens were flat and the sky was slightly gray when it should have shown details like to original print. My goal is to print a few under 20 inch prints and also build a book on Prudence Island, Rhode Island. Wonderful place to shoot in the middle of Narragansett Bay. Lastly, I will look into the Plustek but there is obviously no plug and play scanner so a good lab is the way to go for now.Thanks again for the help fro all, it is appreciated.

  12. Edward, that sounds like a really nice personal photo project. If you love an area, there is no better way to explore and enjoy it than through photography (if you are a photographer!). I'm glad that you have decided to stick with medium format for your project. And, I REALLY hope to see you posting some photos on the Medium Format Photo of the Month thread which goes on the 15th of every month.....in fact February will go up in just a few days. From what I gather scanning is the big hurdle in between Medium Format film photography and online display of the work. It's a shame, because it would be great to see a lot more MF work posted here. I just bought a used V700 which is more than adequate for my amatuer needs. I had an Epson 2450 for the last 5 years which served me well, but finally had to be retired last month. I've taken the liberty of resizing your excellent photo so that it will display in line. I hope you don't mind?

  13. I have an Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner and have scanned numerous 120 negatives shot in the 1960s and 1970s and get files good enough to hang in art galleries. I had some 11x14s made and was told by an expert that the scans could be used to make prints four times larger than 11x14.
    The bad news is that the learning curve to get first class scans was tough. I watched an expert make scans from some of my 120 negs and then used that info to make much better scans than I had been making previously. It was worth all the time and trouble.
     
  14. I wonder if anyone has used a Sony A7r or Nikon D800 (or other full frame high quality DSLR) with a good macro lens and a slide or film copier to digitize their 120 film or slides? How would this route compare to the other two or three (V700 or other good flatbed, Nikon 9000 or one of the drum scanner s)? Would it come in somewhere between the flatbed and Nikon, or allow even better results?
     
  15. I had an Epson 700 but the Nikon CoolScans blow the doors off of it.

    I have a Super CoolScan LS-8000 and it makes tremendous 4000 dpi 120 film scans but before you go out and get one on Fleabay there are some things you need to know first. First, it uses a Firewire (not USB) connection and the Nikon Scanning software will not work with anything more modern than Windows XP. The way I got around this was to buy an older IBM laptop on fleabay which had both a built in Firewire port and XP. It has essentially become an integral part of the scanner. I would also get a tethering cable to go from the laptop to your newer labtop (or my desktop in my case) so you can quickly move files from one to the other.
     
  16. Nikon Scan will work with Vista and Win 7 (i haven't tried Win 8).<br>Without needing to do anything special on 32 bit versions. And i have it working on 64 bit Win 7 too, but i can't remember if (i probably did) i applied the simple 'patch' (an edit of a .inf file in plain text format).<br>So it wasn't necessary to get an XP box to keep using the Coolscan, Scott.<br>Firewire instead of USB was not a good choice, seeing that Firewire isn't as hot today as the name suggests. Yet it is not extinct, nor hard to find (my newer laptops all have that 1394 port. So do all of my older computers).<br>So if you can find a Coolscan, no reason to shy away from it.
     
  17. I did a bit of research and found out that the Epson Perfection V700 provides a great image for medium formats. Obviously they're very expensive so it was not worth me buying a scanner just for one project so I shopped around and spoke with a rep at ScanDigital who uses this exact scanner for these. He then placed my name on their VIP list which permitted me to check out their newest equipment. The digital E-10 had just been added to their line and I borrowed it for some photos of my son running the Porsche race car at Sebring that he and his pal had built. Before I returned the camera I copied several negs and transparencies. Fast forward to 2016. I decided to improve the resolution of an E-10 copied transparency of my wife in a Munich mall by scanning it in my Microtek 120tf scanner. Turns out the resolution did not change but the artifacts were reduced a bit as the scan resolution was increased. It is my belief that a 16 or 24 megapixel digicam could produce reasonable copies in an emergency. Remove the lens of a projector, replace the lamp with a dimmable light source (LED?) and shoot through the lens tunnel. With a mechanical or electronic tripper this could yield a decent number files in a very short time. <br /><br /><img
