ellis_vener_photography
If you live in or will be traveling to "The Windy City" , The Art Institute of Chicago has some interesting photography shows now and coming up through the summer.
Far From Home: Photography, Travel and Inspiration A collection of photographs from Edward Weston (Mexico), Walker Evans (Havana, Cuba), Irving Penn (Cuzco, Peru) , Robert Frank (photographs from The Americans) , Harry Callahan (Provence region of France) , Joel Sternfield (Rome) and others. Should be be grist for the mill before starting on your summer travels. Closes May 5
The Earth As It Was Vintage black and White and color photographs by Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter, and William Clift. Probably should be more accurately named "The American Earth As it Was". If you have never seen Eliot Porter's dye transfer prints, go. It runs from May 5 -September 3, 2007.
That show will make for an an interesting over lap with ...
Jeff Wall Wall art. it's a big show with big prints of intricately staged and directed "Street" photography, a mid-career retrospective of his work so far. Some people think he's an important and influential photographer. Some people (notably Duane Michals) think it is just big, pretentious and boring . Judge for yourself It comes from the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and after this goes to San Francisco later in the year.
The Jeff Wall show also overlaps with "Richard Misrach: On The Beach" . Misrach is a large format color photographer whose best known work is "The Desert Cantos" series. This is new work, all photographs made after September 11, 2001, and the exhibit will be the opening engagement of this traveling exhibition. Very large scale prints --some as big as 6ft x 10 ft. September 15-December 2, 2007.
Information about visiting the Art IStitute of Chicago can be found here.

disneyry
I saw "Far From Home" a couple of months ago, it's not very big, but it's a pretty good collection of images. Penn's images of the Peruvians are amazing, and worth the trip alone.
