OT: Photo Magazine?s 100 most important people

Recommended Posts

The cover of Anerican Photo magazine about the 100 most important

people in photography today made me curious and I bought it.

Back home after two rolls shot in the Brazilian Labor day

celebrations, and enjoying a beer in my favorite couch, I was a little

disappointed to find that, with a few exceptions, a more approppriate

title for the article would be the 100 most important people in

American photography.

So let me start yet another list, which non American persons would you

include in a list of the most important names in photography today?

As a Spaniard living in Brazil, I guess I would start with Salgado and

then go to Vik Muniz or Claudio Edinger in the Brazilians and would

add Cristina Garcia Rodero or Alberto Garcia Alix in the Spanish section.

<p>If we're on family name terms, it's Moriyama, Tōmatsu and Araki.

I think one of these three is hugely overrated. No surprise that Taschen,

with its unerring eye for celebrity and kitsch (but not only those), is

about to publish a monster book of his work. Still, all three are a lot

more interesting than the recent recipients of the Kimura Ihei prize.

Yesterday I bought an anthology of thirty years of prizewinners, and was

disappointed to see how they've descended over the years into

blandness and prettiness. Nothing bland or pretty about the work of

Kurata Seiji, winner in '79. I don't know about the winners of the Domon

Ken prize in general; but I'll swap Kikai Hiroo ("Hiroh Kikai", a recent

recipient) for a dozen Hiromixes, etc. Is Kikai "important"? You decide.

But then again, perhaps you can't: unfortunately his big collection

<cite><a

does not seem to have been distributed outside Japan, despite having

first-rate English as well as Japanese text. Now it's out of print within

Japan, though it's still in stock in some bookstores.</p>

<p>Thanks for the tip. I'd never heard of Seike. He's in a completely

different league from recent winners of the Kimura prize, and recently

popular photographers. One recent winner is <a

href="http://www.e-sawa.com/">Sawada Tomoko</a>. Another is <a

href="http://d.hatena.ne.jp/keyword/HIROMIX">"Hiromix"</a>. This stuff

says nothing to me. It doesn't shock me, disgust me . . . it

just bores me.</p><p>Sorry he's not Japanese, but Chris Killip (who I only

know of via a little Phaidon "55" paperback) isn't American either, and is

good. (Is he "important"? Dunno.)</p>
