  1. Note: In the interests of balancing performance and quality, the topic of image file size and dimensions as normally posted to this recurring thread is under discussion elsewhere in the Nikon forum (the topic is obvious when you look) - please check in there and comment if you have thoughts to share! That's the best place to talk about that particular topic. For now, consider keeping uploads no larger than 1600 pixels on the long side when it matters, and sticking with 1000 pixels when the image feels no pain at that resolution. On data size/compression, try to keep things under 1mb, shooting for 600kb when you can stop there. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc). Are you new to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here: For now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit.

This week, a still from a recent shoot shoot, as it were. Here, a person training for an upcoming competition has the range safety officer's timer beeping in his hearing-protected ears so he knows he's having to be accurate and safe, but he's hustling because he's on the clock where fractions of seconds count. It's always amazing how well-honed skills can unravel a bit when there's time pressure! True of photography, and so many other pursuits. D810 and a 70-200/2.8 if I recall. Any actiony action shots to share this week? Go!

This is actually a frame grep from a 4K video. I was shooting at 4K30p with my Z6ii + 24-200mm zoom in the video DX crop mode. This egret's action was really fast as it got a fish and swallowed it within half a second or so. In real life, I didn't even notice that it got a fish, but it was clear when I look at the video frame by frame. Only in one frame that the bill was wide open during swallowing.

  9. In connection with another thread, do you remember what the shutter speed was?

I have no idea how to read any EXIF data from an MP4 file, but that frame grep JPEG says 1/2000 sec, f6.3 (max for the 24-200 @ 200mm) and ISO 220. That was an unusually high shutter speed for video.

The frame before shows the bill closed with a fish, and the next frame shows just the bill. That is another reason that I can easily use 30 fps for some of those really fast wildlife.

Don't know the term for this „handover” - D750 and AF-S 200-500, cropped a tiny bit and to square
Got the AF-S 200-500 a few weeks a go and I ilke it so far. Have to trade a shallow DoF for more versatility and more keepers.
In low light the 300/2.8 or 200/2 with or without TC is still the much better option.
  13. Wow! Great capture. I saw this first thing in the morning. It certainly woke me up; I didn't even need coffee. :)
