A week or so back, I attended the graduation ceremony for our county's Recruit Class 38, as a class of carefully chosen and freshly trained new recruits committed to putting their lives on the line as fire and rescue professionals. Of course, the venue's lighting was terrible!

A veteran firefighter watches the proceedings from the back of the auditorium.
  2. Swearing in. Let's hear it for VR in badly lit rooms!
  3. I'm proud to say that my niece's husband survived intense competition from many hundreds of applicants from around the country, and passed months of rigorous tests and physical challenges to be one of this county's newest career firefighters.
  4. Nikon FM3A + Nikon 43-86/3.5
  5. Last week's southern U.S. snow event seemed to catch the birds by surprise as much as the humans.

  7. Lex that's a lovely effect. Just playing - a shellscape, lit with two LED lamps.

  10. Two samples from Helsinki November, 2013. Both showing a part of a wooden chapel called "Kirnu".

I went to my grandson's basketball game this past weekend. Taking advice I found from many of you, I shot at 1/400 at as wide an opening as I could. Since the lighting wasn't great, my D600 set the ISO at 3200 for most of the shots. Noise wasn't too bad as you can see.
I was really surprised how seriously these kids take playing. It was intense, almost like a pro game.

    Here's another...

The poster was supposed to lead to the entrance.

  17. Martial arts show from Beijing.
  18. I've switched from Aperture 3 to Adobe creative cloud and I'm getting use to Lightroom, I think I'll like it, there is a learning curve however. Here is an image of our boxer Lilly.
  19. We have been having alot of very foggy days. Sure helps to find the spider webs. Nikon D3X, Sigma 150 2.8 macro, Nikon SB900 flash, !/60 SEC, F/9, ISO 400
  20. This last weekend when I filled the bird feeder, the chickadees were so anxious to eat that they were landing as close as 2 feet in front of me. So, I switched to my 105 mm Micro Nikkor...
  21. Mr. Blue on a dark and snowy day.
  22. Alex, what a wonderful picture with that little loved lens!
  23. Picture I took on Sunday of my neigbour.
  24. Kyle, I love the shot of your Lilly, so much like our own Lucy, similar face and the same chin-on-the-floor pose. I'll have to post a photo of her.
My shot is of a local stream frozen over in the most recent cold wave, the Polar Vortex. A composite of 16 shots taken with D700 and Micro-Nikkor 55/3.5 (all I had with me at the time). Processed in Lightroom, converted in SFX and adjusted to emphasize the white snow and footprints.
  25. Rick Dohme - Great macro of the dew on spider web.
Here are mine for the week. Nikon D800 + Nikon 70-200mm VR I. Enjoy.
  26. Installation of new monument to Denmark Vesey in public park. Talked with architect and unveiling is February 15th.

  30. A few pictures of my favourite subject, the Snow Leopard cubs
  31. and a second
  32. the third, all of these were taken with my D700 as the D800 is in the shop to repair the mirror mechanism after 140,000 frames (at least it is under warranty)
  33. Snow plus canoe abstract. Hey, at least the canoe isn't white too!
    Nikon D3000 and 35mm f1.8 lens
  34. Thank you Paul, Birdie, and Rick for your comments! I really, really appreciate that!
I got to visit Shiloh National Battlefield on Saturday to take photos of the two eagles that are nesting there. It was so much fun, but I didn't really get the shots I hoped to get. Hopefully, I'll get some in-flight next time. Their names are Hiram and Julia and they are nesting in a pine tree right on the side of the road next to a big clearing. This is Julia with a bad hair day.
  35. Some light painting from a while back.
  36. More light painting.

Went on a short hike with my wife in the South San Francisco Bay/Silicon Valley area. It is the chip maker Marvell on the right and Dell Computer on the left. In the center is the new Levi Stadium for the San Francisco 49ers, although that building is actually further away to the south, not that close to the Freeway 237 in front.
    Nikon Df with the 80-400mm AF-S VR lens @ 80mm, f5.6, 1/125 sec and ISO 400.
The caption for Matt Laur's first image specifies:
    D600 at ISO 2500 and 1/100th with a Sigma 30/1.4 at f/2.5
I would imagine that Matt actually used the Sigma 35mm/f1.4 lens on his D600, instead of the DX-style 30mm/f1.4.
  38. Yes, Shun, you're right! Feel free to edit that, if you can. I have both of those lenses, and they are NOT the same thing! :)

Matt, I don't have the ability to edit captions on images. I am sure a DBA can go into Oracle to change it, but 30mm stays for now.
  40. Shot a girls basketball game last Friday and saw this in post. It is all about the background.
  41. There's a heron at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge that often sits very close to the trail.
  42. Hello everyone . I am still enjoying the visiting rufous hummingbirds. A beautiful new boy came to visit the other day.
    D800 500mm f/4 with SB900
  43. Our neighbor lost his barn to a fire last week.
Due to a 5 week drought and strong winds there is a ban on open fires at present. In nearby counties many families have lost their homes and livestock to the recent fires. Hundreds of acres of land has been scorched. The fire brigade was therefore more concerned with spreading than anything else. After a few hours they fortunately had this under control.
  44. I just couldn`t avoid to bring my camera to immortalize this servant`s bathroom in a luxurious apartment, almost intact since late 30s. New pipes I`m afraid, older lead ones were abandoned but not removed. The main bathroom is enormous and had to be impressive, but it was badly modernized for several times.
  45. Happy Wednesday everyone. Sorry I haven't been around for a while. Great photos as always. I loved your web shot Rick and your light trails Martin. Must try that!
Here's some pics taken at a local beauty spot called Devil's Dyke. All three are two shot HDRs merged in photomatix Pro.................
  46. It was muddy in places even though the geology is chalk........
  47. I love the way the HDR process brings out the beauty of the cloud formations.....
  48. Late Fall
  49. Thank you Jim, boxers make great pets, very clown like personalities
  50. Walking the dogs across the frozen marsh last weekend, I came across many abstract ice sculptures left by successive tides.
  51. A bit of sunlight hit this one.
  52. Thank You Chris Wick and Chris Speaker, Peggy very nice Eagle shot.
  53. Kitesurfing or kiteboarding at Gulf Islands National Seashore at Perdido Key.
  54. Thank you. Kent. My 43-86/3.5 is the reformulated second version that was introduced in the late 1970s. It is a brilliant
lens, unlike its predecessor. It is my favorite zoom.
  55. Lovely photos everyone. Can't believe no snow in Helsinki at this time of the year. Not good...
I forgot I had processed one photo for this week's thread. This was taken in San Francisco in August 2013. When I took it it made me think of French 1960s movies, a bit avant guard in the making. Well I processed it as I saw it in my mind. I hope no one gets too angry with me for size & format - so to keep from angering anyone I'll only post one this week.... ;) Hoping I'll be excused for the size
    D800 + Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 f/8 @ 35 mm, 1/320, ISO 100
  56. @Matt - Small world. Here is a quick grab shot I took while attending the graduation ceremony for volunteer (not career) firemen and EMTs for Montgomery County, MD last June at the police and fire academy in Rockville. We were attending for a friend of the family, so most of my shots were of him and his family, not general coverage.
  57. On 5 Feb. 2014, in NW Florida, USA.
  58. And a birding shot.
  59. Hey, that IS some small world stuff, Tom!
