lex_jenkins
Seems like an effort to recognize the artistic potential in the oldest and simplest form of animation on the web - the animated GIF. Cinemagraphs and the pseudo-"3D" animation effects used to enliven documentary movies by making old photographs seem less static have been adopted by wedding photographers and web savvy image makers.

Creative novelty animated GIFs have been around for many years - very low resources needed with crude GIFs - but seemed to enjoy a revival the past couple of years, thanks due in part to online mainstream news media and infotainment sites promoting the format. But pop culture-savvy kids have been creating novelty animated GIFs from favorite movies, TV news clips, etc., for years. Anytime there's a 3-second or so video bite on TV worthy of playing repeatedly, you can be sure someone will create an animated GIF of it within an hour or two.

Widespread us of 3D animation effect is more viable now as faster machines and internet access have made it practical to use compact video players inline with other content.

Adobe's creative cloud option may bring more players into this field who'd like to try Adobe After Effects in addition to Photoshop for hybrid still/animated photography.
MichaelChang
Another novel use of animated GIF is to compress full length movies to accommodate the dwindling attention span of audiences.

Anyone struggling with sitting through a 2 hour blockbuster can now view it in compressed time, thanks to this Reddit thread:
http://www.reddit.com/r/FullMovieGifs
