I guess it must just be a bad combination of distance, background composition and focal length, as usually it seems OK. Those artifacts are probably due to a combination of heat off the prairie, bright light on the BG and relatively high winds. The FE 400/f.2.8, plus the FE 2.0x teleconverter yields smooth bokeh when circumstances allow.
