edmondcarson
I'll be in Carlsbad, NM for the first time in November. I'm hoping someone familiar with that area can suggest some interesting photo ops in or around (withing a 1 hr drive) Carlsbad. Thanks.

alex_lofquist
The Guadelupe Mountains in West Texas are an easy drive from Carlsbad.
Mary Doo
Hueco Tanks State Park is quite intersting with the rock formations and the historic pictographs. It's about 30 miles east of El Paso.
I went there as an extension from Big Bend/Carlsbad/Guadelupe Mountains with two friends. We hired a guide for a very reasonable price ($50, I thnk) to take us to photograph the pictographs. It was a nice hike as well.

http://www.texasbeyondhistory.net/hueco/

Have fun,
Mary
stemked
If you are lucky McKittrick Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas will be in Fall colors. It is said to be a nice show if you catch it at the right time. The hike up Guadelupe Peak is fantastic. New Cave is said to be even more spectacular than Carlsbad; but when the bats come out of the cave (maybe a little late in the year) that is a spectacular event. gordon_lukesh1
Go to White Sands! Also the Organ Mountains outside of Las Cruces. If you have time and a car, get up to Ruidoso and Lincoln and go west cross the top of White Sands. You'll see some Badlands (lava that seeped up). Trinity Site won't be open. Go across to Socorro and head to the VLA (some 27 85ft radio dishes about 45 minutes west, quite striking). Of course there is also Bosque del Apache. gordon_lukesh1
Out here in the Four Corners area, very little is within a one hour drive! :-) You may want to expand your drive range. Carlsbad-->Ruidoso-->north end of White Sands to Socorro-->Maybe VLA-->and back thru Las Cruces. A very long day (a night in Ruidoso might be needed, or Socorro).
