Tony Evans Posted November 30, 2014 Share Posted November 30, 2014 <p>I have been absent for quite some time. Mainly because of my fascination with, and move to, Large Format. More recently I have experienced both the entry into, and exit from, treatment for the veritable old-ager's CC. During this latter 2 years there has not been any photography. However, the bit is back between the teeth, and although I do not yet have the courage get take out the 4x5's, I have been tempted to get out again with the 35mm SLR.<br> What better way to start again than with a copy of my first SLR, the Mamyia/Sekor 500DTL. In actual fact I think my first was a 1000 DTL (I can't remember), but it was a big step up from the little zone focus Paxette. I do remember a M42 Vivitar 135mm as probably the finest lens I have ever owned. Getting back to 135 requires some changes. My past approach with MF and LF has been wet-scanning on the BSH/V700. Frankly, my SLR expertise does not justify such detail. In an attempt to short-circuit this laborious scanning process I have invested in an el-cheapo scanner, something called the Cyberview PF7200 for 35mm. I have been pleasantly surprised. Forget the 7200, but at 2400 dpi it produces quite an acceptable 16 bit Tif., all in about 3.5 minutes. Great for screening and web display. If I ever get lucky enough to take a shot worth printing, I can move up to the wet-scan.<br> Associated with this new enthusiasm was our move this year from Alberta to Vancouver Island. The attached is a result of my somewhat "Touristy" walk around the local village. The lenses are the Super Tak 28/3.5 and the "violated" S-M-C Tak 135/2.5 and SMC Tak 55/1.8, an act for which I was suitably admonished by Forum Members some years ago. Film is vanilla Kodak Colour 200, commercially processed. Scans by the PF7200. It looks like a wonderful place to visit.</p> <p>The 28mm, 50mm, 135mm is a great way to go. When I was putting together my SLR collection that is what I chose. I have a similar kit - a Pentax SL (meterless) body, the 28mm SMC Takumar, the 50mm SMC 1.4 Takumar, and the 105mm f/2.8mm SMC Takumar.</p> <p>Your next step is to load up a roll of HP-5 and develop it yourself. That's a fine outfit, with three of my favourite lenses and the good old Mamiya 500DTL. I've always been attracted to Vancouver, and your images add to the attraction; everything looks incredibly fresh, clean and well-kept. Wouter Willemse Posted December 1, 2014 Share Posted December 1, 2014 <p>I've got the same scanner (called Reflecta on my side of the ocean), and for its price I really cannot find much to complain (though with slides, it impresses a bit less, but the bulk for me are negatives anyway). I'm using the the 3600 dpi resolution (which despite its name is the max I can choose), and get very decent files from very ordinary films - my standard for prints may not be the highest, but a 60*90cm print I had done from a scanned XP2-frame came out quite acceptable.</p> <p>And you gave that scanner some really nice material to chew on :-)</p> Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
