john_markanich
Has anyone had any experience in using the Speedlite EX580 II with a PowerShot G9? Other than the top heavy heft is the combination useable? Any missing features compared to a EOS DSLR?
HenryUK
I've used a 580EX (not II) on a G9. It works fine. I've used sync speeds of up to 1/1000 sec at full output, which you can't do on an SLR.

The red AF illuminator does not light up.

It does look a bit unbalanced but I hold the camera and the flash and it's very stable.

Henry
railphotog
I use my 430EX all the time with my Canon SX10 IS, top heavy too but works great. Especially like the flash pointed up with a diffuser, makes indoor shots look like available light ones.

cliff_henry
I use my 550EX on my G9 and for the most part it works fine. Only feature I miss from DSLR is auto flash when in camera M mode. In camera M mode flash also become manual and must be compensated manually for correct flash exposure.
john_markanich
Thanks for the info. I have to use the G9 at a wedding, as a guest (the mother of the groom loves my candids and wants it in B&W digital). She has someone else doing the formals and video. I'm holding off buying a canon DSLR for as long as possible but know that the on-camera flash of the G9 just isn't up to the task, yet, when I do jump totally from silver to pixels I want a good, powerful flash at hand.
w_t1
i use mine on g9, works fine, top heavy as u mentioned. I bounce my flash a lot, white ceilings or side wall indoors, way better than the onboard flash. Sometimes I use manual focus , "zone focus" which is a bit quicker, esp if dim camera isn't hunting for focus.
don_bryant2
I use a 430EXII and the 580EXII on a flash bracket with the G10 and connect with a ETTLII cable and the results are great. The G10 also works a treat using a Pocket Wizard and studio flashes with a high shutter speed sync rate.
