W/NW Pic-O'-The-Week #41

Recommended Posts

Good shots billblackwellphotography. A slow week for me (laid up with various ailments). So a shot of my mum, in a nursing home in the metropolis - rarely get there. Visited her a couple of weeks ago. So far away, and the countrylink trains have been on the blink for the last several weeks (you know, no investment for the last two decades in public services. Neo-mercantilist/liberal governments. More interested in transferring public assets to private ownership. I digress). M6 FP4, probably a summitar 5cm. Don't ever grow old.

From a party. Again M6 FP4, with flash, again probably a summitar 5cm.

This is of the Olgas (kata juta). Our recent holiday. My colour leica, M262. Think it might have been with a summaron 35mm, but can't remember. May have posted this before. As said, a quiet week. Regards, Arthur (apiarist1)

Tell us about these shots graham_evans|2. I think there's a story here. Would love to hear it. Arthur (apiarist1)

No story Arthur, a WW2/1940's reenactment that used to take place on a local country estate owned by the same family since the 16th century. The owner of the estate hired a new management company that suddenly decided this event was inappropriate to the rest of the estate activities and cancelled this years event at short notice. I think that the groups that Rick photographs are much more authentic. My problem with this lot was always trying to get a shot where no one had a bloody phone in their hand.

Oh, I certainly have the same problems; Too many guys constantly pulling out their phones or using modern cameras and keeping members of the public in view to a minimum. I find 'static' display events so much easier to work around....

Except during the Operation Market-Garden activities last month, where I barely got to shoot anything over the whole week. The organization put me in the HQ display on my own and, with my rudimentary knowledge, I had to explain telephone and radio equipment to several groups of school children. Luckily the link between all the equipment and their mobile phone was a bit of a help putting it in perspective.

And most of them showed a great interest in my big Eyemo camera.

JDW, when I saw your shot, I've got to say, I blushed. Rorschach. But then realised what it was. A proper contax? It's good. Filter? Must be deep red. Or some very expert burning in going on here. Very little grain, so I'm thinking a very slow emulsion film and some really good processing, and then post processing for dust control.

Do not abandon the kiev's. I have a few, which I've not used for some time. Will now fish them out for a frolic. Bravo, JDW, a frighteningly good shot. Arthur (apiarist1)

I'll have to get out my "no name" Kiev again. Although it is about the size of a Leica M, the user experience is very un-Leica. I was able to acquire a Contax mount Nikon SC f1.4 50 with hood that has worked well. The plusses are ease of focus, film loading and wide open performance of the Nikon, at least in the center. On the minus side is the less than smooth shutter release (a Tom A. softy release helped), squinty viewfinder, hard to set shutter speed and overall heavy industrial feel to the controls. JDW, is an actual Contax much smoother than a Kiev?
