Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 doesn't show dng thumbnails

Recommended Posts

In order to be less dependent on camera-and-brand-specific RAW formats I've been converting my Nikon NEF files to the DNG format, you know, the Adobe open format to be less dependent on camera-and-brand-specific RAW formats.

Now it looks like Adobe's own Photoshop Elements 2018 can open DNG files but cannot show DNG thumbnails. Ggggrrrrr...

So, am I missing something and does anybody (Adobe maybe) have a solution for this issue?

That's why I'm going to chat tomorrow (I am more patient when chatting for some reason) and I'll find out how helpful Adobe is going to be and report back. BTW, I "fixed" the dng thumbnails not showing up, but don't ask me how; they just started to reconstruct seemingly all by themselves. How come I don't feel good about this?

But PSD thumbnails still don't show up, so that's what I'll discuss with Adobe. Still !

As I reported earlier the DNG thumbnail issue fixed itself. Hmmmm... Chatted with Adobe about the issue of PSD Photoshop file thumbnails not showing up. The short answer: Adobe doesn't provide that; get a third party codec. Can you believe it? The Adobe-recommended Photoshop save format that preserves most of the image information (PSD) will not show up as a thumbnail without a third-party codec. Apparently Adobe and Microsoft cannot be bothered to provide their customers with a tool to view thumbnails of PSD files, whether you have 1, 100 or 1000+ PSD files in a folder. And now I'm even more :mad::mad:!

Interestingly enough, having been involved in software, customers want what they want, and they want it for free, and preferably right now. This irrespective of the needs of the broad spectrum of users which the software satisfies. Economics of the situation rule. :D

I suspect that a broad spectrum of Photoshop and Photoshop Element users save their files with the PSD format and expect Adobe and/or Microsoft to supply a means to see thumbnails of those files for free as part of the purchase of Photoshop/Element and/or Windows.

Just downloaded for free a copy of sagebrush: problem solved.
