Bill Bowes
Take a look at the Better Scanning negative carriers for the V500. Both my V600 & V800 show an order of sharpness improvement once these neg carriers are aligned over the Epson plastic carriers. Not cheap, but worth the money. rick_drawbridge
Great to see some quality scans from you, Chuck. I'd echo Bill's sentiments about the Better Scanning carriers, especially the roll film carriers with ANR glass infills. Just to keep my hand in, I shot a roll of colour film last week. It was a slightly outdated roll of Fuji Superia 200 I found in the back of a fridge, but it appears to have survived well in the cool environment. I loaded it into a newly-acquired Minolta SR1 with the excellent 55mm Auto Rokkor PF f/2 lens and carted it around with me for a couple of days. Since things seem a little slow on the thread this weekend I'll post a handful of images; the film was scanned on an Epson V700 Photo using Silverfast SE software. Having shot almost exclusively digital colour for the past twelve months, it was quite a refreshing change to scan colour negatives, and I really enjoyed myself. Mike Gammill
Great shots everyone. A great start to our weekly film camera thread. I hope to finish up some film that I loaded earlier in the week and do some processing and scanning later.
James Bryant
Time to start our next thread. As many photos as you like from your film camera. I'll start with a few from the Pentax ZX-7 with Pentax 50mm f2.8 macro. Film was Eastman 5222. rossb
I have not posted in a while but here is a shot at Pinnacles National Park from yesterday. I hiked about 8 miles and took a few shots. This one is with HP5 at 400 and D76 1:1 13min. Nikon FM2n and 28mm D lens. Red25.
rossb
Another shot from the same roll. Camera set up is unchanged from above. The view is towards the west side of Pinnacles as seen from the High Peaks area. I hike up there every week because of my Volunteer job but do not usually even take a camera. I saw on my phone that clouds were going to be out so I brought it along and took some snap shots.. No tripod as I was working and need to be able to get moving in case something comes up on my Park radio.
john_mcinnis
A few weeks ago, I decided to see what I could do with my Kodak No. 2 Folding Cartridge Premo in 120 using it strictly hand held. I normally use it on a tripod or braced against some other solid object. This was just an experiment because the camera has the ergonomics of a broken concrete block when hand held. Nevertheless, it was instructive to see that tolerable hand held photos can be made with a hundred year old machine of relatively low quality with limited shutter speed and exposure settings. The finished photos below were taken with ILFORD PAN F 50, processed/scanned by the Darkroom, and minimally straightened/cropped with Photoshop Elements. Shutter speed was uniformly 1/50 with exposures eyeballed on the old Kodak 1 through 4 aperture settings. The prism viewfinder on the camera is only useful to get within the ballpark for framing when hand held. I caught some flare in the lower right quadrant of a couple of photos which, fortunately, cropped out nicely. Other than that, they are what they are. All the photos were taken in the Old Town section of Olive Branch, MS. Bill Hi Bill, I have seen these talked about. I also thought a custom cut piece of glass from the weight alone would hold the film flatter. Better scanning offers their own film holder ( adjustable height) and glass insert for MF . So does the glass insert work on the Epson 35mm carrier? Don Harpold
Hello Chuck I have an old Epson Perfection 3200 and for the 35mm I use the Epson plastic carrier with the ANR glass and it works fine
Bill Bowes
Hello everyone. Don is correct, in that several ANR glass inserts/infills are available for the stock Epson carriers, both 35mm & 120 format. The advantage for the Better Scanning carrier is that it is designed to be adjusted for correct focal distance while on the Epson scanners glass face. It is also made of medal & does not have a "Wobble Board" feel. My V600 in Hawaii was almost spot on at first try, but my V800 in Puget Sound REALLY needed some adjustments with the carriers. After setting up the V800, I went back to the Epson carriers (35 & 120) & they needed 4 & 6 layers of black electrical tape on the pads that rest on the glass. Doing some quick math, I figured the V800 was almost 4 mm off the so-called factory focus distance. If you did not do too much scanning, the stock carriers & tape shims might work, but my tapped Epson carriers had problems with the tape moving about, so I use the BS carriers all the time. The Epson 4x5 carrier seems to be spot on with it's focus, but all the 4x5 negs are scanned. Bill
James Bryant
From the New York World's Fair in the summer of 1965. Yashica Penta J, 50mm f/2Auto Yashinon, Kodachrome II. You could only see the Pietà from a moving walkway that took you around one revolution and then spilled you back outside. So with the camera motion and slow film, this isn't the sharpest image ever. Still, it was a memorable experience, and I'm happy to have any image at all. I remember seeing it from the moving walkway but had not started photography yet.
