Hanging photos in an empty room with a wonky door lock

Recommended Posts

My problem has been that for some reason the forum has stopped working in Vista. Of course that's not such a big deal considering Vista is such an outdated mess, but as it happens I've been using a Vista laptop much of the time. I've been trying to get used to a new Win 10 laptop which works fine but has a terrible awful lousy keyboard, but maybe I'll get back to posting more if I ever get used to this crummy keyboard!

To summarize my disappointment with Photo.net

" Your subscription renewal is expiring in x days" wish I cared, but I don't.

Way too many issues to list here, used to love this site but now even the simple things like staying logged in don't exist

fortunately a lot of other UNPAID options exist such as National Geographic for one.

I guess for me the forums have always been the thing at Photo.net rather than posting photographs. V2 seems to have done nothing to arrest a decline in number of questions asked and the volume and quality of answers. A decade ago I used to have to ration my time on Photo.net to get other things done. Now there's scarcely ever an interesting new question and the site doesn't seem to have the volume and type of users to help when I have something where I need some input.

I tried "no words" for a while but the charm of rummaging through my back catalog went off after a couple of months - and let me try and put this not unkindly- there is a big gulf between how I'd use "likes" and how I see other people using them and thoughts of back-scratching and unspoken reciprocal deals were increasingly in my mind. I found myself increasingly reluctant to join threads where the starter would "like" all or nearly all the submissions made on it.

So still here, but not exactly active which is a pity as I'd like to be . I'm afraid I blame the last couple of generations of management for not spotting the decline and then spending lots of time & money on V2 which from my perspective has achieved little or nothing. I find myself thinking whether its worth the (unnecessary, self-inflicted) pain of logging in every time to see whether there's anything interesting on here , and deciding that the odds are against it so can't be bothered. I've never been a "can't be bothered " person regarding Photo.net; but I am now.

David H -- Try shooting new or finding a fit in your most recent stuff for No Words -- for me it increases the challenge and thus the fun. I still do need to rummage, but there you have it. As to likes -- I either do or don't -- those I don't like either have technical flaws (some of mine do) or miss the subject by a bit. Seems to be the only game in town.

I actually often "like" photos that miss the subject by a bit. I was never one who concentrated as much on subject as much as on how subject was conveyed. Some of the photos more loosely related to the subject are the most thoughtful and subtle. I rummage about half the time and shoot new toward the theme for the other half. There are no doubt some "likes" games going on just as their used to be ratings games. Early on I made some assumptions about tell-tale signs of "likes" games which I now believe were wrong. So, even though I know some of it is gaming, I try no longer to assume I know precisely which are games and which aren't. In any case, that's really not my concern. My concern is enjoying the forum for the photos of others I encounter and using it to recharge my own batteries.

We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!

I'm disappointed in the decline of informative posts on the Classic forums(a), but my own troubles have kept me from doing my share there too.

On the other hand, I still very much enjoy the photo-oriented forums and dip deeply into my archives for those. I'm getting used to the new interface, but the volume of posts does seem reduced.

What I've learned from dipping into the archives: There are photos I have no memory of taking, there are photos I have no idea why I took in the first place, some of the old stuff is actually pretty good, some of the old cameras (Nikon D50, Olympus/Canon P&S etc) were more than good enough for the Internet, and, most puzzling, some stuff is just gone, can't find it anywhere! "

Hanging photos in an empty room with a wonky door lock"

Could be, slid my photos into a mail slot that leads to that mystery place of lost items like the missing sock, lost toy, photo uploaded to my portfolio.

There are photos I uploaded today that I can't find, or at best see a thumbnail of it in a gallery photo sort but have no way of viewing the photo I just uploaded let alone submit it for a critique. Yes, I can see why some people are upset. This should be simple file management that any computer OS can do built in. Select the folder and view the content. I try sorting the photos in the folder and move my new photo to the top and save. But it still can't be found. So my options are:

  1. Get angry.
  2. Give up and walk away
  3. Stop using my gallery and the critique forum.
  4. Write a bug report of which the dev guys don't believe is happening and they will say I can see all your photos.
  5. Write a witty scathing post about how frustrating this is and how the old system worked fine and the new wall paper does not make up for non-functionality.
  6. Post my picture on 500px. The photo will reach a "your photo is popular and is up coming"
  7. Post my picture on Facebook, at least I get some likes there from friends.
  8. Get out some wine or throw 3 olives into a glass with either Vodka or Gin and an equal part dry Vermouth.
  9. All of the above.

What would choose?

Option 8 sounds the most civilized -- personal taste -- wine is fine, but cherries, sweet Rob Roy or Manhattan! Soldier on, there are still a lot of good folks here, plus, I haven't yet found an attractive substitute / destination (nor has anyone I've talked to). Cheers! S

roughly "We are new, do not know what. But this is a good solution for many of us who have not yet decided whether we have problems navigating the forum or not. Clearly defined."

No kiddin'.
