Has this changed with the new website?

Not to my knowledge.

I note quite a few instances of images wider/longer than 1000 Pixels being posted in forum threads - and that seems to work OK at times, but on the other hand mostly all of the problems I have dealt with concerning posted images are those images which are larger.

I don't understand how the size limit works. I've heard it's 1000 pixels as well. And, when I keep my files to that 1000 max limit they seem to show in threads properly and at 100% size. Yet, I see photos posted, that also appear fine in threads, that are much bigger. Take, for example, the weekly post-processing challenge thread in Casual Conversations. Those photos are being posted at much bigger sizes and they appear just as my photos do. When I first encounter them in the thread, they appear the same size as my own photos. But when I click on them, they get huge, because they are. The current post processing challenge can be found at THIS LINK. When I downloaded the photo in the OP to my computer, without even having clicked on it to make it appear bigger, it downloaded at what I assume was the original size, 4112x3088 pixels at 300 dpi.

In the old days image size was MUCH smaller. These are being "reanimated" through new additions so you will see them. Some kinds of images had different maximums, but it's not worth worrying about. Sometimes the system will accept larger images (you'll have to ask one of the high priests why), but almost always with some COST (slow loading especially).
