wogears
Hello to all:

Famous film photographer Jonathan Canlas went to the Standing Rock Sioux reservation to document the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. He published a slew of images for sale, with all profits going to support the protesters and the Sioux Nation. Leaving politics out, I found this commendable. None of that "share of the profits" nonsense. I did see one problem, though, and I honestly want to know if anyone agrees with me. I could not find a single image in the lot that spoke to me, or said anything for that matter. Interested in what people have to say.

Thanks,
Les
Robin Smith
It looks to be a simple posting of all the shots he took (presumably minus the ones that were out of focus, badly exposed etc etc), so I think its "problem" is simply that it is completely unedited. I think there are certainly 20 good ones within the set: if we saw only those you/we might feel differently.
Robin Smith
willis
I really did not see any that I would "hang on the wall."
It kind of reminds me of the Woodstock photos.
You had to be there to appreciate them.
aplumpton
Pity, cannot enter his site (His email registration box doesn't open).

Indigenous and environmental groups oppose various pipeline projects. Elsewhere in North America, The Kinder-Morgan pipeline west from Alberta to a shipping point north of Vancouver City has been given the green light by the Trudeau government. Another, eastwards to Sarnia, Ontario, and then south to the US has also been approved by the federal (but may also see court actions). The opposition of indigenous people to the Trans mountain pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat (norther BC near coast) has effectively stopped that one. I see not many photographs of opposition rallies, so such images are probably needed to show the other side of the coin.
Robin Smith
Well I agree about "hang on the wall", but perhaps it really was just not that kind of event. To be honest, I was surprised at how small the whole demonstration seemed to be, given the news coverage.
Robin Smith
jonathan_canlas
Well regardless of whether the images moved you or not, I was able to raise just under $13k in print sales in 10 days. The link you provided is to the proofing site which includes everything. My choice selects can be found here : http://canlasphotography.blogspot.com/2016/12/standing-rock.html?m=1 I have made them into a limited edition book as well with all proceeds going to those at Oceti Camp.
