Looking to send my 28-70 afs lens for repair to the us. It hit the ground and the zoom gets stiff from 50-28 and wont pass 35mm. The aperture tab in the rear doesnt snap back freely after opening it. So seems right side took the hit

Looking for a place that can also align focus properly after the fact as i noticed when it was working the right side had focus forward more then the middle/left.

Not nikon. Someone who takes decent prices. You can find expert work at decent prices. Its possible. Someone you know/had service from please. I need to send the lens in from overseas though. I will add export papers from customs to and back for me.

Thank u

By Nikon, I assume you mean specifically a center owned and operated by Nikon. I've had excellent service from Authorized Photo Service in Morton Grove, IL. They specialize in Nikon repairs and are used by many local professionals. I encourage you to give them a call. They aren't cheap, but in my experience they get the work done properly the first time.

With integrated circuits and all these days, the path of the local mechanic becomes increasingly difficult -- both in cars and in cameras.
I've done business with APS and been happy. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet on cost.
If the independent repair service survives anywhere in the USA, it would have to be in New York city, I think.
There are excellent craftsmen in India for older, non-electronic gear, as I understand. I don't actually KNOW, but I would guess what you are looking for might still exist in Japan.
So I am not actually sure that "decent prices" for "expert work" in your sense is "possible". If you find one, let us know, please.

Back in 2009, a strong gust of wind blew over my tripod, and my 70-200mm/f2.8 AF-S VR (version 1) hit hard rock. It broke the lens hood but everything else appeared to be working just fine, until two months later I tried the manual focus ring, which was very stiff.

I took the lens to Nikon in Los Angeles. The lady there told me that they had to replace the helicoil, and it would be between $550 to $650, depending on what they find after they took the lens apart. Since that lens was working perfectly as long as I used auto focus, I declined repair. Keep in mind that was year 2010 repair cost.

Unfortunately, if the lens' value is around $750, this kind of repair cost is likely going to be approaching the cost of the lens.

Authorized Photo Service does excellent work, but they are not cheap.

Can "independent-not authorized" service shops get parts? I think regular customers can't get most parts now.

When I was trying out a D3 with my 28-70/2.8, the AFS motor died. I really think the D3, that looked as though it spent a while on a salt water fishing boat, killed it.

I have used APS with good results, but they are not the least expensive. I looked on the Nikon site for repair of a 28-70, and came up with Camera Service Co nearby in Atlanta.

The lens was better after the service in that AF error at near infinity distance that the lens had prior was corrected. Not cheap, think it was a little over $400. Maybe you could give them a call.

Also Sanford did my 17-35/2.8 for the previous owner and (apparently) did a good job, the lens works well.

I like aps but theres good and good and expensive. I know aps. They do good work. Ive used them many times. Was maintaining my 3 f5 cameras with them in the c41 age. Im certain there are many others that are high end and dont dilute the wallet as much. I will look around. The thing is i dont trust any of them. Who the hell knows what they put inside. What they say is new or used (refurbed part) and even what they did. They dont send you the old parts. They just say whatever they want. And who the hell know they dont swipe a good part u have with a decent part that will fail in a short time. I cant see whats being fixed.

 • 2 weeks later...

Back in 2003, Constance Cook provided some info on a Nikon repair center in Tokyo, Japan. See this old thread: http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/006OP1

Needless to say, that was 13 years ago. I have never actually used that address myself back then and also have no idea whether it is still current information.

Thanks for that. Ill havr to look it over. Thats a damn book.
know I'd get raped by nikon japan. No less then aps. Q but it would be up to factory spec. As close as possible anyway. Problem is nikon japan doesnt accept outside packages. And english js a big problem. I thought about a package forwarding service in japan who can receive it in japan then send it to them. How eould i explain my peoblem to them on letter. Google translate perhaps

I also thought about nikon thailand. I akso contacted nikon uk. They said goto my country service center. My service center sucks a** and thry themselves said they cant fix it and send it to nikon japan. Sorry we cant help you. Only from. Ireland and uk. So thought id forward it to my brother in ie, and he to them. They said sure. So its another option.

Btw, does lens rentals fix repair lenses as a service or just for the gear they rent

My biggest concern is af accuracy and alignment. It had some decentering before. Now.. Who the hell knows. Is this machine an expensive machine? Are there a few? Not many here in my country have a machine for it. Its the reason i believe they want to send it out. According to the estimate price they want some pay as well. Rather do it myself
