What is this Nikon body?

Just got an email from Nikon about something to do with their online store, but it had this image attached to it:

I was like, "What camera is that?" Looks like something out of the Ironman movies. And it looks like it says D6300. Anyway, I've never seen that camera. Has anyone else?

So you can polish a t**d!
Apart from it obviously taking interchangeable lenses, it looks like one of Nikon's bridge cameras on steroids.

FWIW, my 18-140mm VR kit lens looks a lot less impressive without a lens hood, and when it's stuck on a proper sized camera.

That's not a production camera. Is Nikon teasing a new model? It has a DX lens and a mode dial and it's roughly D7000 sized, so if it's a yet-to-be-released item it's probably positioned between the D5000 and D7000 series. It looks like it has a prominently placed microphone, so maybe it would be targeted at video enthusiasts?

Hamish, you're probably right, it's probably a variation of the D5300. Never seen one polished like that, and in the blue color. From looking around the web, the red D5300, which is available in the States, looks like a dull matte finish. The red one doesn't have the two toned microphone either. Maybe it's a prototype.

Take a look at this D5300 link: LINK

Particularly this image: LINK

The official product shots look matte to me, but the real world shots appear more glossy. This is consistent with the Red DSLRs (so terrible) I have seen from Nikon. Again, this is just my speculation. It could be a mystery model ;)

Chip, I posted this earlier but someone took it down:

The one pictured on web sites is certainly not high gloss like the picture at top. Maybe they're just bad artist renderings.

And Shun, as I mentioned, it looked like a D6300 on the top picture.

Tim, I deleted your earlier post. You are not allowed to hot link an image from an outside web site such as B&H, DPReview, etc. into photo.net forums unless it happens to be your own web site. Otherwise, every time someone reads this thread, it will pull the image from that web site, and it is draws on their server and bandwidth. Technically, we are also not supposed to link images that we didn't capture ourselves, but sometimes we don't enforce that for product images.

Also Tim, it looks like you are one of very few people, perhaps the only person, who don't agree that the camera in question is a Nikon D5300, which as far as I can tell is clearly labeled on the camera. If anyone still has questions and thinks this is some D6300, they should write to Nikon and get clarification. We know as a fact that Nikon has never announced any D6000 series DSLRs with four-digit model numbers. I am afraid that any further discussion here is not going to lead to anything useful.

Shun, relax bro, I'm trying to have a discussion. Maybe we don't have to take it all so seriously.

Nikon sent me an email with that image attached. It certainly didn't look like any Nikon I had seen before. Shiny, blue, logo looked like D6300. So I shared it on Photo.net. I thought that was what Photo.net was for, sharing interesting photographic topics with fellow photography enthusiasts. Does it all need to be so serious.

I get your point about not linking images, so I'll avoid that in the future.

But can we lighten up a bit? :-)

Hey Chip, yeah, I looked at them. It does seem that the production cameras were much shinier and high gloss than the artist renderings. And as someone stated, the blue shirt and blue glass walls may be what gives it that really blue look, when it probably actually silver/gray.

Sure looked weird when I opened the email. Like I mentioned, looked like something from the Ironman movies.

Whatever. Strangest looking 5 I have ever seen. Where is the top horizontal element on the 5? That part is pretty obvious and presenting here:

More is at work than a simple scratch--and howinhell does a digital image incur a scratch anyway? Just saying...

I managed to find the original form of the image that generated so much discussion on this thread. It is in various Nikon D5300 PDF brochures, such as this Japanese brochure:
http://www.nikon-image.com/products/slr/lineup/d5300/img/catalogue/d5300_05.pdf
Since it is a PDF that is over 7M-bytes in size, it takes a little while to download. See the image on the left side of page 8, near the bottom.

The model number D5300 is very clear in the original image, attached below. Apparently the 5 has been doctored in the fake to make it look like some D6300, just to generate web traffic. We have seen such tactics on various rumor sites.

00diEM-560465684.jpg.8381724fd7982c5b940dde4eb7f0c197.jpg

Why don't these folks spend a sliver their idle time time to do something useful, such as solving world hunger. ;-)

- Or clean out the garage. (Hahaha!)

Because they need the web traffic to generate revenue for their web sites, as they need to solve the hunger in their own growing family. :-)

So, we were scammed! And here I was digging the shoebox full of money out from under the bed...

Super, but does it change the 5 to an enigmatic 6? I still have my shoebox out...
