joseph_bohanon
Hi,

I have a Canon 60DA about one year old, and just the other night, while changing a lens, I noticed something sticking out loosely just under the flip-up mirror. I managed to get it out and it looks like a tiny fresnel lens about the size of a postage stamp (probably the same size as the mirror). It's got tiny bumps sticking out all around the perimeter. I've tried shooting pictures and looking through the viewfinder and all seems fine, but I'm curious:
1. What is this thing?
2. Can I easily get it back in without mailing it off the Canon?
3. If I do need to send it back to Canon to get it fixed, is it really that necessary a part anyway?

Thanks,
Joe
PS: Picture included below.

Charles_Webster
Looks like it's your viewfinder focusing screen. What does the view through the viewfinder look like now? Can you focus, can you see the auto-focus indicators?

<Chas>
joseph_bohanon
The viewfinder is in focus and I have the little black boxes in there. Adjusting the focus appears to work, too. Could it just be a polarizing filter for the viewfinder?
PuppyDigs
Like Charles wrote, that's the focusing screen. You probably bumped the release tab when mucking around in the dark. I've done it a few times. You manual explains how to remove and install the screen. If it hit the dirt or was handled roughly, you may need to buy a new one as they're delicate and tricky to clean.
Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
dennisgg
I was on vacation in DC and had this happen to my original 1DS. I freaked out but then found it was easy to put back in.
douglas_vitello1
Like the other guys said it is the focusing screen and you probably bumped the release latch with a lens. You should not use your fingers to replace it because of oil and dirt getting into the grooves of the screen.Canon makes some optional screens for the 40,50,60D (not sure of the DA) that include the removal & install tool.I've always liked grid screens so I purchased a Ef -D for my 60D.If you replace screens with a optional one you must reset custom function 4 #4 for the screen you are using. The screens go for around $30US.Adorama,B&H,Amazon all have them in stock. There are a couple tutorials on U Tube on how to replace it properly.
