Two23
What do you photo? ALWAYS--match the gear to the use. Maybe NEITHER is the best choice for you.

Kent in SD
robert_stig
D4S nothing less ;)

for high iso, the D610 spanks the D7100. too much smear on anything over iso 200o with the D7100. D610 holds a lot of detail in the hair and small things.
Peter_in_PA
The other thing we need to know, which might be MORE important, is HOW you are going to use your photos? printing? how big? on line only?
djolk
D7100 is cheaper, has better AF, way better AF coverage, gives you a bit more reach (sort of).
D610 is full frame, better in low light (how much I don't know - never used one) you can go wider, with shallower DOF. Full frame lenses are more expensive...

Get the D7100 if you want to shoot things that move in OK light, from far away. Get the D610 if you want to use wide angles, or shoot in lower light, or want to spend more money, or having a full frame sensor is important to you.

Two23
The better camera is the D7100, unless you are taking photos of motionless subjects in a very dark setting (i.e. an unlit cave.) The problem with the D610 is it cost a lot of money, it will lose its value fairly quickly, and no one looking at your photos will ever be able to tell if you used a D610 or a D7100, unless you are shooting sports or wildlife. Then, the photos from the D7100 will likely be better because it has better/faster focus.

In my opinion, you are going at this the wrong way. The camera is the LEAST important thing in photography. Lenses are the most important. It's a beginner's mistake to put a lot of money into a camera, then have not much left to buy lenses with. Lenses will make a noticeable difference in your photos; cameras very little. Choosing your photo gear depends ENTIRELY on what you want it to do. ENTIRELY. There is NO SUCH THING as a "best" camera. I have a good job and can have any camera that Nikon makes. Any of them ever made, in fact. I chose the D7100 because it does everything very, very well and I don't have thousands of dollars tied up in something that will quickly lose value. I used to shoot a medium format camera for stock photography. The image quality from the D7100 is easily much better than that. It's the "best" camera Nikon makes. ;-)

Kent in SD

nikofile
There is a visible difference in the files from these two cameras. The D610 will give you better DR at low ISOs and less noise at high ISOs. Both have very good AF systems for their intended purposes.

If you like to shoot birds in flight or other fast moving wildlife you are going to want the D7100 because of the AF system and the resolution. If you are going to photograph people in various lighting conditions you will want the D610.

Really, it depends on what you want to do. I think the best all-arounder, if you are going to have a single camera, would be the D7100. If you will eventually own two, I would still start with the D7100.

However, I recommend you buy only full frame lenses.
