elizabeth_garside
Hey there photographers! I've been searching for a Nikon flash lieu with the nikon sb-700 but it is so darn expensive! Any recommendations for a flash for a nikon d3100?
leicaglow
I have heard good things from colleagues about Yongnuo, available off of buyers on ebay. I have used LumoPro from Midwest Photo, and I liked them. Though I admit, I really do prefer the Nikon Speedlights.
phillips
You might want to look at the SB600. Used-KEH has them for about $225. I've had one for a few years and it has been very reliable, works well with my SB910 as part of the Nikon CLS, and separately has enough power for all of the bounce flash situations that I have used it in.
CvhKaar
I have positive experience with Metz Mecablitz versions, depending on the output needed you can choose between different models.. :
http://www.metz.de/en/flash-units/product-ranges/system-flash-units.html?tx_dkdkbshopblitzanw_pi1%5Bcameratype%5D=2#anwsearch
or
http://www.metz.de/en/flash-units/flash-unit-recommendations.html
djolk
I have an SB-600 - if you can find you one, as Ryan mentioned, used its a good flash for not too much money. What about the SB400 (or whatever it has been replaced with...)?
doug_smith13
Ditto on the SB600. I use it with my D300 with dependable results.

rodeo_joe1
Nissin make an affordable range of Nikon compatible flashes. Their lowest priced model worth having is the Di622, but if you can afford it the Di866 is a much more powerful and useful model. I have a Di866 and it appears to be just as well made as Nikon's speedlights.
dxin
I don't really trust Nissin because my Di622mk2 failed once and I have to send it in and wait for a whole month, during which I have to shoot my cousin's wedding without a flash.
Flashes are very likely to fail, even Nikon recommends sending your flashes in for service and inspection TWICE A YEAR to make sure they work whenever you use them. Keep this in mind when you are thinking about a cheap or used flash.
Don't ever try Yongnuo, just don't.....
