Hello from Evanston!

Recommended Posts

I'm Arun, and I have been interested in photography for a long time but never got started. I finally got the impetus when I recently had a baby. I'm a complete beginner though, and hope to learn from the other members of this forum.
I recently bought a used Nikon D90, a 35mm 1.8 Nikon prime, and a used Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. The equipment far exceeds my skill so I would really appreciate if anyone can give some pointers on taking half decent baby photographs (for starters) with the equipment!

Practice, practice, practice - it's free since you have the equipment! I think the answer is in the lighting more than anything else. Focus always on the baby's eyes. Try to get shots of your wife and baby together. Take advantage of opportunities which present themselves. The 35 isn't bad for normal shots on a cropped sensor, just don't get too close. Shoot at f5.6-8 until you get a feel for depth of field. I'm attaching some examples from 41 years ago when my daughter was born (taken with a fully manual film camera). On the indoor shots, try a bounced flash off the ceiling (not aimed at the baby). With a little practice you should be turning out real keepers.

00b4dw-506263584.jpg.0600a130bff9bd4089a647fb81f3bcf1.jpg
