danny_low
I am partial to Epson myself. Their photo printers consistently rank among the best and most importantly of all, they all consistently rank among the best for longevity of the prints. If I had to chose between a Canon or HP, I would go with HP mainly because their paper handling mechanisms are better. This is important if you change paper sizes or types. I recommend you go to

http://www.wilhelm-research.com/

and see what they say about any particular printer model you are looking at. The best print quality does you no good if they fade away in a few years so you have to constantly reprint them.

Danny Low

perry_lee
Interesting that you put the choice between Canon and HP. The choice is normally between Canon and Epson. HP does not do a lot of marketing to the photography market; at least they don't in the periodicals that I read.
I like Canon, and have used Canon exclusively for eight or nine years now. I have a Canon iPF6100 right now, and I run everything through it from heavy glossy to light matte photo paper to canvas for gallery wraps.
If I didn't use Canon I would use Epson. HP honestly has never crossed my mind.
carol_a.
HP and Canon are both good choice for printers. Whatever you choose, you'll never go wrong. I know that there are a lot of professional printing companies using HP or Canon printers to produce and print high-quality images with fine resolution. I will choose between the two, I prefer an HP printer. You can choose from an ink-jet or laser HP printer but I think laser HP printer can produce a better image quality than the inkjet printer. It can print on papers faster without worrying that the quality of ink might fade or smudge since HP printers are good at handling papers. No need to worry about paper jams so you'll get the best printed image for you.
perry_lee
Laser printing will severely limit your print options, both in terms of paper choices and color gamut. four laser toner cartridges will not give you the nuance and subtlety that 6 to 12 inkjet cartridges will. Also any glossy or plastic coated photo papers will not work in a laser printer. In fact the heat from the fuser will melt the paper and you will have to replace a very expensive fuser.
i would be surprised if many contributers here use laser technology to print out their photos. A 600 dollar inkjet will give you much more presentable prints than an 800 or 1000 dollar laser will.
