irusan
You can use any piece of editing software. What you have to do is follow the State Department's guidelines for an acceptable image.

http://travel.state.gov/pdf/Photo-Quality-Requirements.pdf

BTW, I'm assuming that Leudis is here in the US.
RaymondC
Just use any software. It how the photo looks. Remember no smiles and no eyeglass glare or scarfs. Also you should print the photograph outside on glossy paper and then trim to your liking ...
jay_poel
If you are in Canada:

Photos must be taken by a commercial photographer.
The name of the photographer or studio, the address and the date
the photo was taken (not the date the photo was printed) must be
provided directly on the back of one photo (see illustration).

So it ruled out doing my own and the ones done at Henry's looked terrible (washed colour and lack of sharpness.) Yet, I was allowed to take my own photo for my Firearms Possession Certificate.

But as Rob said, any program will work but it is easier if you have one that has rulers and allows you to take measurements to get everything right.
amlahanko
If in the US I believe all you need is a 2x2 image with a plain background. I remember taking photos for an old boss of mine, cropping them, and submitting them and he had no issues getting his passport.
john v.
Yes, you can do your own passport picture (assuming US Passport). Just follow the guidelines that Rob posted. I did this myself and there were no problems. This was after paying for two passport pictures that came out horrible (one had a bad purple cast), I decided I could do better. To bad the DMV doesn't let you do this.
jay_poel
The setup at Henry's was pretty basic - pop-up flash straight on with speedlite on a stand behind me lighting a white backdrop .
mariosforsos
Some countries (especially in Europe) also have printing requirements (i.e. you cannot print on the standard home printer) - it has something to do with the way they scan (apparently, some prints generate weird banding when scanned by the special machines they use to prepare images for passports).

But, normally, if you download the appropriate specs and follow them to the T, you should be able to shoot your own photos.
erwin paul photography
I live in the USA and do European, mainly Dutch, photos and the acceptation rules are stricter then USA.

I had a (German) client the other day that had her USA passport photo taken at CVS. Boy was that one bad. A large shadow on the left (from the face) and the eyes dark, so dark you can not see the eyes. She wanted me to make a new passport pic.

For other readers if they find this tread, this is the software I use and recomend:

http://www.idphotos.info/en/Home.aspx

And I use a HITI S420 passport printer, true 400dpi and diy sub.

http://www.hiti.com/english/Products/Ph ... erview.asp
jcuknz
The requirement for the current electronic passports are rather different than the old ones. I have taken my own passports in the past but an updated version last year was not acceptable and the simplest answer was to pay my bucks and get a camera shop to do them for me.
I would consider the camera used inferior to mine but that's life today :-) and they were printed on one of those simple home use 'things' [ :-) ] compared to my A3 machine :-) Urrgh!
