Mike Gammill
I thought with this post I'd pay tribute to the old 35 RC ad from the early 70's (remember the guy hanging out the window snapping a photo with the RC).

Mike Gammill
Ok, well I can't hang out the window as far as the guy in the orginal ad. But I do have a leather coat to show the camera's pocketability.
Mike Gammill
Photo.
sorry. Will add the rest of photos later. My "Bellsuck" Internet is doing it's imitation of dailup this morning.

starvy
I am just a little young to remember the advert so wondered if someone could locate a video of it somewhere?
JDMvW
Video?

I guess you are young, you whippersnapper. Here's the ad - a print ad from Popular Photography March 1973.
The woman is shown larger scale on the right.

But, Mike -- you need the Porsche as well as the leather coat!

Mike Gammill
Thanks, JDM. I couldn't find the issue I wanted to scan the ad. Sorry, no Porshe, just my oldest son's Chevy S-10 pickup. Meanwhile, the leather jacket pic now.

Mike Gammill
Now for some pics taken with the 35 RC.

Mike Gammill
Like the Konica Auto S2 that I use so much, the Olympus 35 RC also uses shutter priority automation with option to manually set apertures if desired. All images with 35 RC done with Tri-X souped in HC110 dil. B and scanned with Epson V600.
Next image is of Highway 45 alternate. Going north takes you to Tupelo (Elvis' town of birth). South goes to Meridian.

Mike Gammill
Used a K2 filter on the previous image, BTW. Yes, I do have a couple of the hard-to-find 43.5 mm RC filters. I also have the 43.5 to 46 step up ring so I can use my Konica C35 filters as well.

Mike Gammill
More up close. I really like the 42mm focal length of the RC lens. Shutter was set at 1/250 second. I think the auto aperture was around f11 on this one.

Mike Gammill
Last one.
BTW, no digital was used to take the photo of the camera or the photo of me with the camera. I used a not-quite classic Maxxum 5 with Tamron 24-70 (manually focused with self-timer) for the first shot and same camera with Maxxum 50mm f2.8 macro for camera in the pocket photo. Yeah, I know digital's handy for taking photos of classic gear to post here, but just didn't feel like it.
So, I would welcome seeing other classic threads start with a nod to the magazine ad like I attempted here. Sorry, couldn't find a model for the viewfinder shot. ;-)

rick_drawbridge
Nice idea, Mike. It could take a little while to organise, though....great selection of very sharp and well-toned pics, too. That Oly is a fine little shooter, for sure.

patrick j dempsey
My 35RC is absolutely my go-to camera when I get tired of fussing with picking out lenses and messing with flashes and hand-held meters. It's not the most "refined" camera ever, but it's quirks are part of the fun I think.
tony_lockerbie
Great little camera, goes well with the jacket! Is that a girl in the ad? Could be a man, there was a bit of crossing over in the seventies, with those dodgy floral body shirts and long hair. Yeah, I know, I was guilty too!
dan_b.4
That's actually a rather slender guy in the ad.
Mike Gammill
Typical hairstyle from 1973. I let my hair get long during that time. The guy in the photo has what we used to call a "Bobby Sherman" haircut.
JDMvW
Wow and I lived through this period as a young man, so I should have considered the possibility that the leaning figure was male....

However, I'm still not sure about the gender of the androgynous character in the ad. The facial structure is fairly gracile, the jaw is small, and, during this period, facial hair might be shown on a male.

Nice shots, he says as he wanders off muttering to himself.....
Lou_Meluso
Good series, Mike! I've never had the RC but it looks like a great little shooter.

That's a guy in the ad. I had that same polyester shirt, opened appropriately, with requisite chest hair and gold chain. Always a big splash at the disco. :o)
chuck_foreman1
Nice pics! Excellent little shooter and I applaud using another classic for the placement shots too! He seems to be hnaging out a Porsche 911 Targa.. is that also a Targa hood for the product placement pic too?
Mike Gammill
Thanks everyone for the kind comments. This idea came to me Saturday afternoon between bowl games. Hurried outside for the car picture and then back inside for the leather jacket photo. The RC photos had been taken earlier in the week. Processed the film late Saturday evening and scanned Sunday morning before going to church. I had originally planned to post the RC pictures along with the camera, but thought this might be fun.
For those interested in trying this with other classics, there are numerous magazine ads from 1960's and 1970's photo magazines that should be easy to imitate. The Konica Auto S2 ads were very plentiful as I recall. Lots of Nikon, Canon, Pentax, and Minolta SLR ads during those two decades with Olympus joining the "club" with their OM series in the early 70's.
Go back to 1950's back issues if you have them for even more variety. Be sure and post a "warning" if you pay homage to the Miranda ads from that time. ;)
patrick j dempsey
OK, that makes me want to reproduce the old Olympus Pen EE ad with the girl pulling one out of her rear jeans pocket!
steve_renwick
What a coincidence; I happened to bring my 35RC with me today and I wore my leather jacket. If I find a floral shirt like that, will someone donate the Porsche?
mediumformat
The RC is a great camera! I'm always amazed at the quality it delivers, and how easy it is to shoot. How can you beat being able to see both shutter speeds and aperture setting in the viewfinder all the time...flash sync at 1/500th...hot shoe and pc connection...very accurate auto exposure. It really is a great little camera.
