joshroot
The newest addition to my Welcome to Filmtown article series is on the Leica IIIf and Fuji's Provia 100F.

Filmtown: Leica IIIf & Fuji Provia 100F

If you are unfamiliar with the Filmtown series, you can read my reasons for creating it here on the index page:

http://www.photo.net/columns/joshroot/filmtown/

As will be regular with the Filmtown series, enter yourself in a contest to win some free film just by making a comment on the article regarding your experiences with either the Leica IIIf (or any LTM leica really) or Provia 100F. Posting an image from either is welcome as well.

And yes, there was a pretty long gap between the first Filmtown article and this one. My apologies for that. I bit off a bit more than I could chew over the holidays and new year. I've got another Filmtown article coming up quickly and we will be caught back up in no time.
patrick_mont
Pretty cool. Is there any way you can have an article on Kodachrome with a Canon FD mount camera such as the A-1, AE-1 Program or F-1?

joshroot

Is there any way you can have an article on Kodachrome

I've been thinking about doing Kodachrome. But it takes a lot longer because we all have to send the film out to Dwaynes these days. So it will take some planning on my part.

Canon FD mount camera such as the A-1, AE-1 Program or F-1?

SLR's are not the focus of this article series. As I talk about in the Welcome to Filmtown series introduction, my point is to showcase offbeat, unusual, interesting, etc cameras. Stuff that most people might not have heard of and that might get them excited about film photography once again. I have nothing against old film SLR's, but a film SLR isn't going to captivate someone who is already shooting a digital SLR. Aside from the whole manual/electronic difference, they are just too close to the same thing for many photographers.

I'm dedicated to the idea and am having a lot of fun doing it. Plus, the response has been so positive overall that I'm encouraged even more than I am for normal photo.net stuff.
janne_moren
How about a Mamiya 7? Doesn't get much more high-end in rangefinder image quality. And perhaps get hold of the new Fuji/Voigtländer MF folder later this spring?

randall_pukalo
Josh, Kodachrome is no big deal to get processed. It wont take any complicated planning on your part to do it. Drop it at any Walmart, Kmart,CVS, etc. and it is back in about 1 week, postage free, and with top quality.
Plus, it is definitely one of the most unique and special emulsions out there. I think you find a LOT of interest in such an article.
patrick_mont
Thanks Randall I was going to say the same thing. I will add that you can mail it directly to Dwayne's and you may be able to get it back in less than a week. I don't think it would fit your guidlines but would you ever do a Polaroid article too?

I just mean that the whole thing will take a lot longer than using a film that can be done at my local lab. But I'll get around to it.

Just waiting for the film to get here so I can get started.
michael_dimarzio
Josh, congratulations on a great article. It was very fun to read and informative. Back when I wanted a vintage rangefinder, I went with the Contax IIIa. , I wish that this was available to me when I made that decision.

One suggestion if I may, announce the article in the Film, Casual, and maybe the Canon/Nikon/Pentax forums. If one young dSLR shooter thinks it's a cool camera that doesn't come to the L forum, it would be worth it.

Thanks and congrats again-

We ask users not to post the same thing in multiple forums, so I try to not abuse that sort of thing myself. I usually announce the article in the two forums that best fit the article at hand. In this case, Leica and Film. Perhas I will make it a sticky thread for a bit in the Unified forum as well.

dan_mcclain
I would love to see an article on a Kodak Medalist, possibly coupled with Tri-X or Ilford HP5. It isn't a SLR, and it certainly qualifies as "offbeat."

Lou_Meluso
Nice article, Josh, and lovely pictures. I am very pleased to see the Filmmtown idea move forward. I've been making a few posts on my rangefinders, like this little jewel: http://www.photo.net/classic-cameras-forum/00SUYI over in the classic manual camera forum. They seem to get a good response. It's terrific to see Photonet give some real focus to classic film cameras AND the film stocks used with them.
