blarg_.
I'm the proud new owner of a mid-production CJZ 180mm zebra labeled "aus Jena". I got a great deal on the lens, but it came with no accessories. Does anyone know where I can find one of those long 86 > 95mm lens hoods? How crucial are they? I haven't had a chance to shoot the lens yet as it went straight from the USP box to the camera shop for CLA'ing, but while I wait I thought I'd try to dig up the missing hood. I've searched ebay and google, but found only straight 86mm hoods and 86 > 95mm adaptor rings, no hoods. I also have a 300mm in the mail that is complete with ALL the accessories - I know the 180 and the 300 take the same filters so will the hood from the 300 work or is it too narrow and will cause vignetting? JDMvW
My Sonnar came with a huge hood. A picture is attached. It has no identifying marks on it and maybe you can tell if it is the same as the 300mm.

robert_marvin
I think the 300 and 180 Sonnar hoods might be the same (although, not having a 300, I'm not sure). It wouldn't hurt to try the shade from the 300. The 95 mm hood that comes with the 180 is surely much deeper than you'd expect for that focal length. Both original plastic 180 Sonnar hoods and fairly cheap Chinese metal tele hoods, in 86 or 95 mm (for which you'd need an 86 to 95 mm step-up ring), come up often on eBay if you do need one. JDMvW
My hood is definitely metal, not plastic. It came with the lens from the FSU, so who knows if it is vintage DDR or USSR.
robert_marvin
JDM von W., The hood that came with my "zebra" 180 Sonnar looks exactly like yours, but is made of of a heavy bakelite-like plastic. Perhaps Zeiss Jena used different materials over the long production run of these lenses.
erie_patsellis
there's always a 86 to series 9 adapter, then a series 9 shade, they're built like tanks.
blarg_.
here's an image of the 300mm lens from the vendor (haven't received it yet).
JDMvW
Try it and see - it surely looks like it could be the plastic(?) version of the same hood. Perhaps it was originally for the 180-, but doubled up for the 300? The lens cover with mine is also metal.
evan_dong1
Blarg, The photos within your thread here are the correct lenshood respectively for the suggest focal length. It appears that you bought your lens off EBay from Cupog? If so, you can have find you the original 180mm lenshood ALONG with the 86mm to 95mm stepup ring as shown with the Zebra 180mm. That would allow you to mount the 95mm lenshood without any problem. The 180mm lenshood is a tad longer and thicker in the middle over the 300mm lenshood as shown. If you have just the 86mm to 95mm stepup ring, then you can buy any 95mm telephoto lenshood. I use a Heliopan 95mm telephoto lenshood. Its a gem... blarg_.
Evan, the 300 did come from Cupog, but the 180 did not. The 300 appears in much better shape but was significantly more expensive. I was thinking about asking him if he had any extra hoods from 180mm lenses, but I want to actually GET the 300 first and check the quality and condition of what I bought first. I think I might buy a 50mm Flektogon from him as well to complete the set if the quality of the lenses is as good as the pictures promise and I might ask about it then...but before I do, I was just trying to find out if there was a difference between the 2 or if I could use the same hood on both and get good flare control without vignetting. kari v
50mm Flektogon - Buy it, it's simply a great lens. So is the 180mm, I have both. 300mm shade in that picture looks very much like the hood I have for the 180mm. Try it.
kari v
Shade... hood... oh well... My 180mm hood is about 7cm tall and 11cm wide.
evan_dong1
Blarg, The lenshood shown on the 300mm is the original one for the 180mm Sonnar. The one I have for the 300mm MC (bought in Germany), measures out to 1 7/8 inch from the threading. The 180mm (as shown on your 300mm) measures out to 2 1/2 inch and it flares out abit more then the 300mm I have. If you need a jpeg, PM me and I will shot it for you to compare. The range of lenses for the Pentacon 6 from CZJ are great. Get the 80mm Biometar MC, 50mm Flektogon MC, 120mm Biometar MC, 180mm MC,and 300mm MC. In each case the MC would be the best option, but shouldn't deter you if you have a great buy on an non-MC lens. The best Russian/Ukrainian lens is the 55mm ARSAT PC. Last of course, are the Exakta 66 Schneider lenses:60mm Curtagon, 80mm Xenotar MF, and 150mm Xenotar. Hope that this will help you out. blarg_.
Well as it turns out, I was able to spend some money on glass, so I ended up buying a 50mm Flektogon, a 180mm Sonnar, and 300mm Sonnar, all MC'd, all in mint condition. Turns out the hoods on the 180mm and 300mm are identical (at least on the MC'd model). This means I only have to bring one hood when I take the toys hiking with me. Now I'm trying to decide if I should sell the 180mm zebra lens.
kuekat
If you are still looking for the hood there is one listed on Ebay now http://cgi.ebay.de/264-Sonnenblende-M95W-Adapterring-M86-M95_W0QQitemZ7559878116QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDE_Elektronik_Computer_Foto_Camcorder_Foto_Camcorderzubeh%C3%B6r_PM?hash=item7559878116&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 I own the same hood and use it with an 86mm ring on my Zeiss Jena Flectogon 50mm F4 "red" MC Its fabulous!
