two questions (maybe silly)

Recommended Posts

Fred:

I can help you fix the email situation so that your @photo.net email address is the one that is given out to other users. It's just a matter of making a change in your "my workspace" area. I know there should be more instruction on the site regarding functions like this. *sigh* It's just one of those things I haven't been able to work on yet. Also, the name change offer is open to you as well. For help with either, email me at contact@photo.net or use the "contact photo.net" link that is at the bottom of every page.

Derek:

While I hesitate to promise anything, I strongly believe that a system like that will be a component of photo.net in the not too distant future.

Hhmmm...I think I just gave-inadvertently-a good example of saying something that may come off as negative, and rather than deleting it, I wrote a little apology/ditty to refute any implied or referred harm. Someone please tell me if my intent is perceived as I meant it?! Darn...started out wise, ended up the fool w/my mouth wide open! Oy Vay!

Thank You Fred! The two things that keep coming to mind as I read this thread are:

1) Why would anyone take away the freedom of many to stop the abuse of few?

2) One of the greatest things about free speech is that allows the evil, stupid, rude and harmful people to feel comfortable enough to show their true colors so the rest of the people can see them for who and what they are. It is when they hide that they do the most damage. (I guess I don't have to mention the anonymous 3/3 rates as an example)

Thanks, Josh, for that info. I'm fine with my name. I have little to hide and could care less

what people think, even of the real me. But I do like to avoid having my email address

known for obvious reasons. I'm going away for the weekend, but will contact you when I

return next week.

Just one thing about Derek's suggestion before adopting it wholeheartedly. Craigslist

personal ads has a similar "self-governing" flagging and deleting system, whereby several

flags will mean that a post disappears. That, itself (woe is me) is often abused. It is pretty

common knowledge that groups who don't approve of the so-called "homosexual lifestyle"

routinely decide to flag gay personal ads and long lists of ads often get deleted in no time.

There is a strong chance that those who write the anonymous ratings BOTs would write

flagging bots as well, summarily deleting critiques left and right. There will also be those

of one political bent or another, those who disapprove of nudes, etc. joining together to

do a little policing of their own.

I must repeat that the less policing, whether administrative or user-driven, the better.

We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!

Fred:

Believe me, there would be significant safeguards for that sort of thing if we do implement it. I have no interest in trading one set of "bogus member" problems for another.

Anthony:

Thanks for the compliment. It's my job to deal with the tough issues on photo.net, but it's always nice to hear a few kind words as well.

Josh, You have one of the hardest jobs here on PN, actually I'm feeling kind of guilty starting this stupid forum BUT I think we are getting somewhere. I just know I am taking up lots of your time.

Maybe like Fred said that we need to make people more aware when signing up how PN works. Names, e-mails etc...

I didn't know also that everyone and their "friends" would know my e-mail either. You wouldn't believe how many "new" best friends I have that e-mail me at my real e-mail adress. I have actually spammed a few of them.

They have also had their accounts since deleted without me ever saying a word to PN.

So, the question might be educating PN members more AND that might go down to my FIRST question here on the FORUM. The flow of the forum. I couldn't find THIS forum questions. Where is it? Silly me, am I that ignorant (yes?) or is it hidden somewhere?

I just feel like the forum is set up a bit weird to find all the different subject or area's. THAT is why everyone always asks questions in the casual corner. Just curious.

The short answer about why this forum is not listed more obviously is that when it is, the forum gets used for questions that should be solved in other ways. If you think that we see a lot of the same posts over and over, you should have seen it when everybody knew about the feedback forum.

<ul>

<li>"How do I upload a photo"

<li>"How do I change my password"

<li>"Why isn't my camera selling in the classifieds"

<li>"I want to buy an image from a photo.netphotographer"

<li>"I used to know someone from your site in high school, what is his phone number"

</ul><P>

And so on. These (and all the others) are questions that should be asked via the "contact photo.net" link that is at the bottom of every page. The feedback forum should be used by more knowledgeable people to post more serious site issues or discussion. Most everyone who has been active on the site for a while is aware of the Feedback Forum and we hope that by the time they need to use it, they are past most of the basic questions.

Wow Micki! You hit on something that has been bugging me too lately. I thought I would be posting as kgriffith or something close since that is what I wanted my url to be. I was kinda bothered too that when I post it posts my full name. I noticed it immediately but I didn't think it was something I could change. Felt the same way about my email address. Good to know that it's fixable... it just hadn't bugged me enough yet to inspire me to start asking questions.

Josh... you do a bang up job, seriously.

Karen

I often go back and edit my comments, sometimes days later. I will certainly miss being able to do this. I don't change the tone or anything drastic but I do correct grammar punctuation and bad sentence structure.

Yes I know I should proof read better at the time.
