buying a film scanner or saving money for a d-camera

Recommended Posts

thank you! actually it doesn't seem there's a visible significant difference between the two nikon scanners.I almost thought ls 5000 produced some pictures with more blur - maybe a difected autofocus - than V. The most significant difference that meets the eye in my opinion is the scanning times: V ls 50 takes almost twice the time.

i think you're at the point where slight, scan to scan misfocusing errors on the part of the hardware mean more than the actual hardware differences in performance.

i could be wrong, it's only one sample. but i think i would get the V and save for a dslr and have both film, a good scanner, and a dslr in the near future.

Unless you can get it off in person prices off the auction site for scanners are expensive, most times new is more than B+H, used is not much less unless you went for a older model like a IV, still its only 100 less if that at all. B+H has a new one for $550. Oh, I forgot you are in Milan, but anyway .. research your prices properly ...

Coolscan 5000 has batch load of 50 mounted slides and a feeder for a spiral roll of uncut roll of film such as a roll of 24 or 36 developed but unchopped from your lab. Apart from that the V does it.

Is there an Italian equivilent of Costco or Sam's Club Wholesale?

They scan my whole roll of negs for about $5US. Thats about 300 rolls before I match the price of a great scanner, but oodles of time saved. Not the best but suitable for the web and cherry picking.

I've struggled with the same choice, but I'm electing to rig up a place where I can just do quick contact sheets. That is enough for my purposes.

mmmh I don't know. Maybe I could find some laboratory which can scan my shots for few euros but it would be very umconfortable: I should spend time for bringing films to and back and I would dipend on the decisions some else made when scanning my pictures. I need something to save my analogic negatives and to get images for web quickly, elaborate them or rescan if necessary or if I like. I don't want to pay for something that couldn't be definitive anyway. I think it could not be the solution for me.
