ann_m
Just wondering if anyone is using developers other than the Pyro formulas for the J&C 200/400? The Massive Dev. Chart does not list either film. I have some of the A49 en route to try with the 400, but was wondering if any of the more common developers that I have on hand at the moment, HC110, D76, Rodinal, XTOL,TMAX, have provided good results for anyone else....either for silver gelatine or Pt/PD printing. It would just be nice to have a starting point for testing tray development of the 4x5 sheet film before I move up to a larger format film . Thanks for any input. richard_rankin2
The J and C web site has a table for those films as well as the Efke films with several popular developers: http://www.jandcphotography.com/efke_foma_jandc_developing_times.htm . I've personally used Rodinal 1:50 with J&C 200 but haven't used any 400. The last time I developed the 200 film, I used 10:30 instead of 12:00 minutes for some portraits which came out very nicely. john_cook1
Ditto the J and C website information. I especially recommend the R09 developer which is the original pre-war Rodinal formula. It is an old developer specifically formulated for old-style films such as these. They go together perfectly.

dave_schneider
I've been using the J&C Classic 200 film 4x5 for the last few months. I have developed in ID11 1+1 for 8:30 in a tubes and also in Rodinal 1+100 for 22:00 in a tray with :10 agitation every 2:30. I have been quite pleased with the results but am still working on a fine tuning my process. The above times give what most would call N-1 development which is well suited to the subjects I'm working on now. The Rodinal gives just a little compensating action with this agitation scheme. The only problem I have had is the emulsion seem very soft and prone to scrathces. I am switching to a hardening fixer to see if that solves the problem and will also switch to a water stop bath.
