1. Hi all.

I have a lovely flash for my sped graphic. Think it’s a 3-cell but that’s because it fits 3 chunky batteries. Anyhow is catalog no 2773. It’s in lovely condition. Issue is I have put batteries in and put a test bulb in it. When I press the red button on the back it lights up. I got a new lead which has what looks like a US plug socket that goes into the flash. The other end has 2 little holes which I believe plugs into the 2 prongs on the lends I have, it seems to fit perfect. Issue is I don’t know how to get the lens to be triggered by the flash or vice versa. Do I plug the lead into the flash in the shutter socket or should it be another one like solenoid? Any ideas what could be wrong as it’s seemingly not working. There’s also a dial I can change from N to 1 or 2 also on the flash. If I choose 1 when I try the red button my test bulb doesn’t work but it does when set to N.

I should add I’ve only tested it with the test bulb and not a proper one time bulb. I have some but didn’t want to waste them messing around.

    any help much appreciated.

  2. Hi all

I have just got back my Leica iiic I bought broken which I had serviced and fixed up. It looks and feels amazing. I also had the lens cleaned. I am very excited to use it.

I had a couple of questions. I have loaded the camera successfully and ready to shoot. My issue is it’s different to my other 35mm cameras so wanted to ask a couple of questions.

Firstly, my lens doesn’t have a 5,6 or 8 aperture. There’s a 3,5 4,5 6,3 9 12,5 and an 18 Is there a reason for this? To use one of those apertures above do I just kind of guess the point where that is?

I am trying to use the sunny 16 rule with this camera. Never done it before and would love to try and not use a light meter. Do I set it to the 200 setting on the top shutter speed dial for a film iso of around 200?

  3. I am absolutely loving the direct poitive paper from ilford, it is great fun. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other positive paper that might have ahigher iso or whether theres a way to maybe create something similar which has a higher iso.

Also wanted to know this. Is there a way to use a monobath with paper? I know they exist for film negatives but was interetsed to know if there was a monobath for paper. Also whats the difference between developing negatives and paper is one stronger in development than the other?

  4. Bill C this is amazing and yes I see the guide on the flash bulb packet! Ok I’m very excited to try this once the leads here. I’ll let you know how this goes but seriously thanks for taking the time on this and explain it so clearly.

orsetto thanks! Yeah so I actually picked this up from a photo assistant who was given this camera by Mark Seliger. Apparently, and it’s hard to know of this is true, but a number of famous photos he took used this camera. Regardless of this it’s in excellent condition and lives inside the metal box it comes in which is built perfectly for it. Its really wonderful. I have no idea it might actually be worth anything honestly but I’m just really enjoying being able to use it to I doubt it’s going to a new home ever haha. That’s so funny they were used for Star Wars haha!

  5. Ok this is all so helpful thanks. Let me get some filters.

@jdmvw I totally agree. The issue is I’ve never actually shot any of the 4x5 in the day and don’t have any I can do never experienced it. For a few shots I’d love to try it in the daytime. If I had a lower iso film that could do this I 100% would but as it’s all I have I thought it would be ok for a couple. A very very valid point though.

  6. Don't know your camera, (or Polaroid cameras much at all) but I seem to recall there were some press on ND if you can't stop down enough, and other filters available for some Polaroid cameras. Someone may know more.

I'm using 4x5 film in a graflex speed graphic. Oh so an ND filter should help me slow the iso down. Is there a particular one I should get and is there a way to calculate the new iso when using one. This is amazing if so!

  7. Ok everyone so I have purchased a lead and its on its way so I am excited to try this. I did have a question and maybe this is the most newbie question ever so forgive me.

I get the flash and set it up. I've been using a light meter and getting that right now which is great (or much better at least). I just had a thought. How on earth do I know what to set the camera to for a flash? I have never thought about this but what would I do? Its amazing I never consideted this before.

  8. You're quite welcome.

Regarding cords, Paramount cords is a name often bandied about. I don't have any experience with them, but it appears that they would be able to supply just about anything.

Or if you wanted to, and are a bit handy, you could probably rig your own. I don't recall what the solenoid connection is like, but the flashgun should take a standard two-prong lamp plug. If you've got a junk lamp laying around you might be able to cut off the plug with a foot or so of the cord and rig that to the solenoid. Maybe... I dunno for sure. Best of luck with it.

Thanks so much Bill C. I'm going to try and get a lead if possible and then I'll DIY if necessary but that sounds like it could work. I'll be posting back here. I am really excited to try this. I've seen these cameras used in older movies and theres always seemingly a close-up of the bulb going off, always wanted to try this

  9. Takes me back a long time! Was using the old Candlestick bulb flash on Dad's Leica M 3 in High School. Sport coat, handkerchief in the chest pocket, good bulbs in the right pocket, used in the left - handkerchief folded for installation and removal. I'll never forget the smell of the bulbs when fired. Of course your bulbs are different than the 6 FP bulbs I recall, so the drill may need to be different. I still have a couple dozen bulbs. Will have to see if I have a bulb flash they still make a battery for - will always have Dad's M3. Good luck and have Fun!

Thanks Sandy! If you find some you should certainly take a few shots. An M3 wow! I'll post back here once I have a lead and batteries and taken a few shots.

  10. Hi all

I have a beautiful speed graphic that I am still new with but love. I am about to experiment with using the flash system that came with my camera and wondered if anyone could help me understand how to use it, I'm wondering if a piece is missing that charges it?

The flash makes use of what seems one-off use bulbs and I have a few of these. Along with this I have the flash mount you attach these bulbs to in the corcular mirrored holder and a pole which attaches to the side of the cameras that has a few inputs running along it. My issue is I have no idea how it gets triggered or charged. I might not have those pieces to do this. Please see the photos below to illustrate what I do have:

Any advice on how to connect this to the camera, a guide maybe and also what these settings are on the back would be hugely helpful.

Sorry if these questions are super stupid

  11. Hey there

Glad you go this working. I had the same issue with an old sx-70 that hadn't been used for a long time. I thought I'd have to get it fixed but a helpful ex-polaroid repair specialist I know told me they can seize up due to time and to open and close the entire thing 50 times, even more. I did this and although it started working it was a little touvh and go if it would work, after about 100 more open and shuts its back to its good old self so hopefully yours just got past that hurdle also.

  12. Hi all

I havd the absolute pleasure in getting a photo of mine made on the awesome Polaroid 20x24 camera using original polaroid B&W, super rare and going to run out very soon.

I am getting this framed and as I love the process so much I want to frame both parts of the print so the positive and the negative next to one another. I was wondering if there is anything I should or could put over the negative to protect it further so it doesn't fade completly to black, at the moment you can make out the details of the print and would love to keep that. Any ideas on how to preserve this would be hugely appreciated.

  13. Hi there

I noticed that supersense will atrke your digital image and then make it into a 8X10 or even the legendary 20x24. They do this by putting the ipad infront of the lens much like how the instant lab works. Check their processes here - Make your photos real - SUPERSENSE Photoservice

Also I found this. Not digital but a way to turn slide into 8x10. See here - Polaroid POLARPRINTER 8x10 Model 0020 *RARE* Inc. Instructions & 35mm Spacers | eBay

  14. Hi @donald_miller|5

Actually you can get film for it. One Instant is now making new film for this format but its quite expensive but worth a go I'd say.

    One Instant

Before purchasing make sure you do this:

Clean the rollers in your camera and also make sure you have a fresh battery for it. Its a weird battery (found under a flap on the side of the camera. ALthough odd its still possible to get one! Here it is Exell Battery A19PX 4.5V Alkaline Battery

Also before using definetly watch a video on how to load and use this film as its a little unusual. Fun though!

    Hope this helps
