1. Hi Robertsimpsonnorth,

I also prefer to use Lightroom for most editing needs since it takes less space to save multiple edits, and histories can be undone. In some cases, I have to resort to Silver Efex to achieve a particular look that I want. I haven't yet figured out how to emulate all the effects of the Silver Efex plugin using the LR settings only (Silver Efex can be used as a plugin from LR, but the resultant image is saved as a tiff, and the settings are not saved). Your last edit looks better to my eyes than the original post, with more contrast and definition in the vegetation, for example.

In the film days, I always found that I had a lot of difficulty shooting color and black and white simultaneously (with 2 cameras). I had to sort of get into the spirit of black and white. To some extent now, if I shoot in RAW and convert later, getting a good black and white is something of a fluke, not something I "intended." I'm thinking (maybe wrongly) that specifying monochrome in the camera (something some cameras can do -- one of mine can) which causes the digital image on the camera to be black and white helps me to look for good black and white subjects, even if when you get back to the computer, the black and white jpegs embedded with the raw get converted back to color. Course I can only do this if I set it to RAW + Jpeg so while the RAWs revert, the jpegs stay black and white.

  2. Which Cade's Cove is this? Where is it located? I ask because the one that I know of is in the Smoky Mountains and it doesn't have a lake, pond or river big enough for canoeing. Just curious.

Last night, only had the IRIX 15mm f/2.4 with me at the time. I call ultra-wides sometimes "big sky lenses" - and it sure helps if there's a "big sky" to photograph.

  3. You are invited to upload one or more of your landscape photos and, if you’d like, to accompany your image with some commentary: challenges you faced in making the image? your intent for the image? settings? post-processing decisions? why you did what you did? the place and time? or an aspect you’d like feedback on? And please feel free to ask questions of others who have posted images or to join the discussion. If you don’t feel like using words, that’s OK too—unaccompanied images (or unaccompanied words, for that matter) are also very much welcomed. As for the technicalities, the usual forum guidelines apply: files < 1 MB; image size <1000 px maximum dimension.

I introduced my photo from last week with the comment that “there was a potential image whichever direction I faced,” and this is what it looked like 2 minutes earlier at the same location, but facing 90 degrees to the west.

  4.
I have mixed feeling about this. I've lived in the Santa Barbara area since the mid 1980s, and have enjoyed running into many of the bright, enthusiastic students attending Brooks, setting up their tripods around town or in the surrounding hills, or shopping for photographic supplies at Calumet or Samy's. Indeed, Brooks was one of the reasons why our area, with a small population, could support multiple professional camera stores.

But later on I also ran into Brooks students when they were selling off their photo equipment at bargain prices on their way out of town. Notepad++ Malwarebytes FileZilla When a garage sale offered pro-level Nikon lenses along with furniture, it was invariably a Brooks student moving away and giving up on photography. Too many of them were doing this for me to continue feeling good about the school. In 2005, when Brooks belonged to the Career Education Corporation, it was cited by the government of California for, among other things, misleading students as to what they might expect to earn after graduation. Required to make changes, it seems that Brooks made some progress, but the decay of its reputation as well as a diminishing market for the education they offered continued. It's sad, because, from different people, I learned about dedicated and talented instructors, who will no longer be teaching in our area.

Well it was the top of the heap or at least top 10 photo school. I lived nearby and was actively involved and helping several students to realize their dreams while they went there. Anyway, I'll fondly remember the school.

  5. Check out Grey Learning...

I have a problem with the Kelby books as they tend to be "recipe" books and don't really get at the underlying principles I have taught digital photography on a college lever and used the Kelby books because they had been adopted by the previous instructor.

As Rafa says Katrin's books, or anything, print or internet, Notepad++ FileZilla by Tim Grey would be a great place to start.

I go back to version 2.5 of Photoshop, and every time I upgrade, I get another copy of the Photoshop app in the "Missing Manual" series. Good for learning and then stays good as a reference.

  7.
I am srinavin kumar , have my under graduation in mechanical engineering from Tamil nadu, southern part of India, 2011 pass out . I completely left it and switched to photography , I am self learned photographer trying to create wonderful Image manipulations like never before, I also shoot street, travel , Landscapes which I love, But I want to expertise myself in conceptual/creative works. I have won a honorary mention in last year scott kelby photo walk(that's the only recognition). The sad part is I don't have any opportunities here in my place, People around me don't respect my work, I don't want to live in this place for sometime. Its been a while I got paid for a work. My parents are giving a little support so I am managing but I know its soon gonna stop. Whenever I tell people of what I am doing they are being sarcastic , they reply like " How can you make a living with what you do ? ", It hurts every time . All my friends just exploit my talent and use me for free to take their special occasion, events, facebook profile pictures :/.Even though I am almost burned out, I just couldn't give up ,I am just completely lost, I am bad at PR. I don't where to go , but I still carry my camera and keep shooting that's the only thing makes me happy. I am thinking about higher education not in some traditional photography courses, a mix of 3D modelling (I already know solidworks), Lighting (which I don't have the cash to experiment till now ). Apart from it, the reason why i seek a college is ,for a change of my lifestyle, a new positive place ,getting along and surrounded with wonderful Inspiring people who are in the same boat. All I need is a little push and support, then there's no stopping.
The most successful photographers (and other artists in general) aren't necessarily the most creative or skilled, but are those who are the best salesmen and marketers of their work. So if you're wanting further education I would suggest learning marketing and sales techniques.

  8.
The Ilford folks are great photo sciences however they tend to lean concretive because they want you to have outstanding results. That being said, don’t pay any attention to me, follow Ilford’s instructions.
The rapid fix main ingredient, the one that does the fixing is ammonium thiosulfate. This is “rapid” fixer because it acts about 50% faster than sodium thiosulfate which has been around since 1837. About the middle of the last century ammonium thiosulfate came available as a liquid 60% concentration. We use this chemical diluted one part concentrate to three parts water for film and one part concentrate and seven parts water for papers.

https://ovo.fyi/xvideos/ https://ovo.fyi/youporn/ https://ovo.fyi/xhamster/

No one can truly predict how much film or paper a given volume can safely fix because a lot depends on the silver content of the material and upon how heavy it was exposed and developed before it got to the fixing bath. Anyway, we gage fixer life on the square measure of the film or paper being processed. Thus each roll has a specific surface area thus three rolls has 3X the surface area. In other words we count by roll.
Don’t despair, there is an easy way to test the fixer for serviceability. Save scraps of film for testing. The sniped off tongue is commonly used or a sniped off centimeter or two. You test in room light with an undeveloped scrap piece of film. Swish the scrap film in the fixer solution diluted to working strength at the temperature you will be using. Start a stopwatch or note the time upon entry of the scrap in the fluid. You will observe the film enters the fixer as opaque and then turns milky then transparent. This is called clearing the film. You time how long it takes for the film to clear. Now your safe fix time is twice the clearing time. This is a tried and true test that never fails. You discard the used fixer solution when the time to fix is intolerant. You discard when the spent fix become dark and or has floaters or solids floating. A truly spent fix can stain your film or paper. An improperly fixed film can be salvaged even after days or weeks, by re-fixing. You don’t have much to worry about, Re-use and but test.

Here's a video that demonstrates the process that Alan describes above:

Long ago, I used a Kodak solution in order to determine if fixer was still good but then, because I used the same procedures repeatedly, I just figured out when the testing showed my fixer had gone bad, and never surpassed that amount of film and paper to be fixed. Good idea is to err on the side of caution and toss fixer early.
