Hi Russ, Are you sure that is an ai lens - looks like a pre ai to me so mounting it could cause damage to the camera. I have an old D700 and several non ai lenses and wouldn't even try. (Plenty on Google) - Bill.
it is a pre-AI that I modified to AI. Works beautifully on the DSLR’s.
Thanks

Yes it is an AI lens. I AI’d it myself. But you are correct, in seeing that it was originally a pre-AI lens. It’s the first edition of the classic 105 f/2.5 lenses.

I have a Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens, which takes the HN-1 hood. A 72mm filter is too large to fit the hood, which isn't threaded to accept filters anyhow.
Do what others have recommended - put a 52mm filter on the lens, then screw on the hood.

I have been using the HN-2 (made for the 28mm lens) on my 24mm f/2.8 prime, and I am getting no vignetting. It seems to be fine on a 24mm lens.

I like it. I prefer the higher contrast version.

I prefer the HP finder, AI lens and no soft release or eye cup.
Makes sense. I AI’d my two pre-AI lenses. 35 O f/2 and the 105 f/2.5 lenses.

If you wear eye-glasses, the HP finder offers better relief, and even with my thick glasses: no problem seeing the entire frame with the shutter speed, meter, and F-Stop windows. I picked up two F3HP bodies at the end of production, but my 1983 body just keeps going.
That makes sense. Eyeglass wearers love the HP finder. I have another F3 on the way. It has the HP finder on it.

I've seen some nice hardly used F3 bodies from sellers from Japan on Ebay. I've purchased many camera bodies and lenses from Japan on Ebay and only had a problem once, but that was remedied very quickly. I love my F3 but have switched to the non FP finder because I like the view better and it makes the body smaller. Good luck with yours it's a great body.
I too, prefer the non-HP finder.

I have both the Kiron and the Komine model. I prefer the Komine.

I do know from experience that the FE will give accurate exposures in A mode. Minutes or hours.
-
Are you suggesting that I start a new thread on the same subject, or that nobody is interested in the Nikon F3’s anymore?

Lex
Good to hear that the F3 also delivers accurate and long exposures in Aperture priority mode. I thought that only the FE was capable of that.

Yup. I have the 28mm f/2 version, which I've had apart at least three times to de-grease the aperture mechanism. I distinctly remember completely stripping and washing the iris blades in alcohol and de-gunking their seating last time.
I recently re-discovered the lens during a house move and, guess what? The darned iris was greased up again!
Is there a crude-oil teleporting device hidden in the bloody thing?
I can't think what else could cause it except alien nano-technology.
Aside from that, it's a pretty good lens used on the APS-C format. Just don't look too closely at the corners and edges when it's on full-frame though.
You have to remove all of the older lubricant, and replace with a modern synthetic lubricant. Once you do that, you will never have this issue again.

Kiron stopped exporting lenses to the west primarily because they were so busy making all the short zooms for Nikon.

Lynn, do you have a source you can cite for this information? I highly doubt Nikon sent work out to a smaller firm for their lenses.

Nikon did outsource some of theirs lenses. And yes, Kiron was one of their manufacturers.

And the LCD is as dumb in 2018 as it was in 2004 or 1984...give me an F2AS or FM2N any day. I'm also in the vocal minority who loves the F4.
Even though @Russ-Suzanne still thinks that they need to find and dig up every old post about 1980s SLRs to comment on them...I don't know how may times I've seen that photo of an F3 with a 70-150 f/4 Nikkor...

Still the best camera ever made, except, of course, for the Leica M3!
I really tried to like the Leica’s. Just couldn’t. Ergonomic nightmares.

I find the Marumi DHG line of filters to be every bit as high in optical and construction quality as my high end B+W filters.
