    Nikon PK-13

You need to realise that using a BR-2, or other reversing ring, takes away the ability to change the focus of the lens. In other words it gives one fixed magnification - which may not even be a useful one.A BR-2 is really only useful if combined with a bellows or extension tube(s), and then only if you intend to exceed 1:1 magnification I see, that makes a big difference. Thanks for the warning. "I think I found the answer, the ratios are for the closest focal point, correct?" - Errm, not really. If you'll bear with me, please: I was under the impression the ratio expressed the relationship of the actual size of the object with its size as recorded on the negative. So a toy soldier 2cm high at a distance, lets say, of the minimum focal length and with a ratio of 1:2, would be recorded as a 1cm image on the negative. When the soldier is moved further away, the ratio would necessarily change. What you're saying makes me think the ratio is related to the change in size with respect to the size that would be viewed by a standard lens. Are either of these interpretations correct?

Thanks a lot JDM, c_watson and rodeo_joe for the links and information. As well as the PK-13, which is available used where I live at a reasonable price (around US$40 for one in mint condition and without the 100% import duties!), I've also found the BR-2 at a cheaper price still. I may decide to buy the BR-2 first and experiment as it seems like it'll offer the most flexibility at the lowest cost (although I'm a little bit apprehensive at exposing the rear element of the lenses when positioning the camera so close to the subjects). The 105mm focusing between half a metre to around 370mm with PK-13 also sounds interesting. One more question I have (and sorry if this is explained somewhere and I missed it): with all these magnification ratios given in various tables, to what distance between lens and camera do they apply? Or do the ratios apply to an object in focus when adjusted to infinity on the lens?

Hi Forum, I'm considering buying a Nikon PK-13 for use with an FE and an F2. I wonder if you could please clear a few things up for me: 1) I understand that the camera won't focus at all when used with lenses 28mm or shorter (I have a 28mm 2.8 Ai and Nikkor-P Auto 24mm 2.8). Is that correct? 2) Can I mount a non-converted pre-Ai Nikkor-S 50mm f1.4 on the PK-13? 3) Can i stop down to use in-camera metering with my two film cameras? 4) I read in one thread someone complaining that a 105mm lens wouldn't focus at all, does that sound right, or specifically, can I use a Nikkor-P Auto 105mm f2.5 (Ai converted) with the PK-13? I'm aiming to photograph near-field things and not at infinity. 5) I also know the PK-13 is really made to be used with micro/macro lenses and eventually I plan to get a 55mm micro, but can I expect "useful perspectives/enlargements" until then with my 50 and 105mm lenses? All the best!

  6. I annotated two rolls of film with this on the weekend. For me, it's quicker to use than pen & paper (easy to use in one hand), but was, I admit, a challenge to annotate between shots as the sun was setting fast. I have a few new lenses and I think it's going to valuable in learning how they behave. How long I'll keep using it I don't know, but being a mildly(?) obsessive type I may continue!

  9. An iPhone/iPad equivalent is "PhotoExif" - has fancier graphics and is a paid app. See: PhotoExif | Photistics
  10. Yes, I don't imagine these things are for everyone. I don't develop my own negatives and they come back scanned numbered from 1 to 36. So in the field it should be pretty quick for me to mark shutter speed and aperture, the two things I'm most interested in. Frame number is incremented automatically and lens name will stay on the last value until you change it, when a lens is swapped, so really just a few seconds work and you can respond to WhatsApp messages while you're there! :)
  11. Hi Forum, I know that Classic Manual Cameras is probably at the Luddite end of the Photo.net spectrum, but I thought I'd make a post about an Android app that I've just discovered called "Exif Notes". It's a free app that allows you to log details of your film shots as you take them. This data includes things like: the lens used for a given shot, aperture, shutter speed and even GPS coordinates. You can pre-enter data for all your cameras and lenses so that when you come to log a shot, it's very fast to do so, because for example the ranges of F-stops and shutter speeds for a particular camera/lens combination is already known. Another thing that speeds things up is that for a particular camera, you tell the app which particular lenses may be coupled with it. So, when you click to select the lens used for a given camera, you're given a limited list of lenses that pertain directly to the camera. I don't know much about Exif, but it seems to include standardised image (and audio) metadata types. Flickr, for example, recognises it. While I haven't yet tested this side of Exif Notes, one can export ones shot data as a database file, email it (for example) to the computer where your scans are stored, then use a program called "exiftools" to embed the metadata created by Exif Notes in the associated scanned files. So then when you import a file into Flickr (i imagine also photoshop and lightroom), for example, all the data about apertures, lenses, films and other notes will be included with the image. I'm going to use Exif Notes to make up for a faulty memory, so i know what I did in a particular shot. Hopefully it will improve my photography. So, if you're interested have a look in the Android play store. I don't know if there's a version for iPhones Cheers, All the best!
  12. Thanks again everyone. In the end I bought a cheap FE body without an eyepiece after missing out on the extremely cheap FM body, with an eyepiece (which i mentioned above). I'll have to buy the eyepiece separately. Buying from outside Brazil isn't an option, unfortunately, as pieces like that can sit on the docks for months before getting delivered and are subject to 100% duties on the item and freight. A pain about the Nikkormat Ftn, it was a beautiful looking camera and lens, but the FE should be a winner and I'll give it to my son with the spare 50mm 1.8 AF lens. All the best!
  13. I also found the eyepieces you suggested locally. I need 2 of these, one for my son and one for my second camera. Unfortunately quite expensive here. I may be changing plans however on the Nikkormat as I've found a very cheap FM body with rubber eyepiece for just twice the price of a new eyepiece. Waiting on confirmation that the light meter is working.... If it is, I'll get the FM and give him a spare 50mm 1.8 AF that I have which is in perfect condition.
  14. Ah, thanks for the information about the DL-1. I have just this week received a F2 Photomic and by coincidence, last night I was wondering about how to illuminate that little light window on top of the head. For lack of better ideas I was thinking of using a mobile phone and perhaps rubber bands for this! Hadn't heard of the DL-1 but found one here in Brazil online now for about US$30 and bought it. It does look really useful. I was disappointed about how hard it is to read the meter in low light. All the best!
  15. Thanks a lot Ben, Robert and BeBu. Good to know!
  16. Hello all, I'm thinking of buying a Nikkormat Ftn for my son. I found a good one online but it lacks an eyepiece with a rubber ring and I need to protect those expensive high-powered glasses of his! Is the Nikkormat Ftn eyepiece the same as those for the F/F2/FE/FM? Thanks!
  17. Ah, thanks. No red blob. The serial number, I'm fairly sure, is FE 3894728 although it's pretty worn. It's a black FE.
  18. Thanks Eric. I hadn't heard of these and it sounds like it might be just the thing, as it seems to work like a cable release from what I've read. All the best!
  19. Hello all, I've got an FE that I've had for years. The shutter has always been a bit fussy. I have to press directly downward on the shutter button or if not, it won't engage. Is this something that can be fixed or is it likely that I need to have a part replaced? I've had the camera serviced twice but to no avail. Any recommendations? Thanks,
